Eaters, farmers, farm workers, everyone wants a secure, healthy, and fair food system for our families and friends. However, our food system is facing immense problems. Between another disaster storm emboldened by climate change, increased food prices while corporate profits increase, and, the unjust treatment of the farm workers who grow the food we eat, many are throwing their hands up, weary and unsure of what to do.
We, the young and aspiring farmers and farm workers of the National Farmers Union (NFU), are living in the intersections of these tangled food system problems and are already actively working on the solutions! In addition to growing food for our communities across Canada / Turtle Island, we are informed and supported by the collective NFU membership to advocate for a stronger, more just food system rooted in the principles of agroecology and food sovereignty. This means actions and policies that address climate change, that make food more accessible locally, and fairly split up corporate power to empower farmers, farm workers, and eaters in our food systems.
By contributing to this fund, you're investing in the present and future of farming and food production, land stewardship, food sovereignty and agroecology. This youth gathering will help leaders return to their communities and plan local gatherings and advocacy work in 2023 and beyond.
This fundraiser is a chance to bring weary hands together in solidarity, to build momentum, to strengthen the work towards a secure, healthy, and fair food system for all. We are organizing a three-day strategic retreat in Nova Scotia / Mi’kma’ki in February 2023, and have already raised half of our total budget of $22,000! By contributing funds you will support us in covering our travel and lodging costs. You will empower us to create a strategic plan and return to our communities to cultivate this work all across Canada / Turtle Island. With young farmers and farm workers making up less than 1% of the Canadian population, everyone who eats is a necessary part of the present and future of farming, and our collective food system solutions.
