Ian's Ride Across Canada 2016

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Ian, and thank you for visiting my GoFundMe page!

I have been into cycling of various kinds for much of my life. It's been a long-time dream of mine to ride a bike across this huge, beautiful country of ours, but only recently - within the last couple years - have I truly experienced the joys of cycling as a means of travel and discovery.

Over the years, between school and work and life, my fantasy journey was pushed to the back burner, and eventually vapourized altogether - that is, until a very cool documentary rekindled the wanderlust in me, and after a reassuring conversation with my extremely supportive wife Jacqueline, I was inspired to MAKE the time to take this trip.

So, in May of 2016, I will be flying to Victoria, BC, to start my leg-powered trip on two wheels, cycling nearly 8000km to St. John's, NL by the end of August, 2016.

As you can probably imagine, taking four months off work would quickly dwindle a bank account. Plane tickets (to BC and from NS), daily expenses like food, and equipment repairs and replacement - the cost of a trip like this can add up. And although I've been actively saving up for the costs of being away and buying any new equipment, I still need help with the modest (but cumulatively considerable) daily expenses of being on the road for nearly four months. The budget breakdown of my goal amount, assuming 14 weeks on the road, is as follows:

Flights (to BC, from NS) + Ferries - Approx. $1000
Food - $15/day - approx. $1500
Lodging (paid) - 2-3x /month (when free camping is not possible) - approx. $45-$90 / night - approx. $1000
Bike maintenance and other incidentals: approx. $500
TOTAL: $4000

Due to the nature of bicycle travel, anything is possible - realistic costs could turn out to be much higher, or much lower, than expected. I can't do much about the former except pay it myself. But if the latter is true, I pledge to donate any remainder of the funds to two charities - The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and The Nature Conservancy of Canada - so your money goes to a worthwhile cause no matter the outcome.

If you would like to follow my progress leading up to, and during, my trip across Canada, please check out my blog.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support!
