Help me be a successful story and not a statistic
My name is Aretha Boomer and I am 24 years old. I have been in the foster care system since the age of 6 years old, and I aged out at the age of 21. Once I became 21 years old I ended up being homeless. I lived in 3 shelters and lived with over 500 women. I was homeless for a 1 year and 8 months. Despite the obstacles I was presented with I preserved and I didnt allow my setbacks stop me from going back to school and becoming successful.I am currently enrolled in SUNY Empire State College studying Community and Human Services. I am 2 credits away from receiving my associates degree in Community and Human Services. Also, my utlimate goal is to transfer to CUNY Hunter College to receive a master's degree in Social Work. I was privileged to receieve a scholarship for my first semester and blessed enough to raise money for my second semester. Unfortunately, even though I am a straight "A'' student and applied for scholarships, I still lack the funds to continue school .
As stated in my video attached, according to Foster Care statistics only 3% of former foster care youth will obtained a four year degree. Out of thousands of foster care youth, only 3% have the opportunity to receieve a higher education and I think that is really unfortunate.
I am striving to become a Social Worker so I can make a positive difference and give back to that population. I am currently in that 3% and I am trying to stay in that percentage. I am currently raising money to finish school during the fall semester. I am also going to continue to apply to scholarships and send letters to companies to ask to sponsor me.
I am currently an ''A'' student, and I have a 3.64 average and I promise you, your contribution will not be a waste of money, nor will it be in vain. Please help me stay in school so I can receieve a higher education and not become a negative statistic of the foster care system .
Every donation counts, and no contribution is too small.
