Spiro's Backyard - Help Make It Functional
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Ben, and the guy in the photo is my mate Spiro.
He's a 47 year old, fun loving, 100% wheelchair bound guy with cerebral palsy. He has no living parents, siblings, family, or extended family, and lives completely on his own in his family home. He requires carers 3 times a day, morning, noon, and night, to dress him, feed him, bathe him, and carry out the simple household and day to day tasks and chores that we would all take for granted. In spite of all of this, he is fiercely determined, and has learned to be as independent as he possibly can with the disability he has. He doesn't let it define him.
He's got a great, cheeky sense of humour, and the one highlight of the week is taking himself into his favourite city venue on a Saturday night to go have a few whiskey's, and a "dance" to some good music.
Spiro's other love is gardening, and growing vegetables like zucchini's and tomatoes. He loves getting out and tending to the plants but he'd really like to be able to do more in his backyard.
We (his few close friends) have helped and tried to do as much as we could over the years with concreting, clearing out years and years of hoarding from his (now deceased) mother and aunty, making raised planters so he can access them, planting plants, and doing as much landscaping as we can on the small amounts of money we've had, and the goodwill of people who have donated their time and services. It's very important to me that he has the ability to live as much of a normal life as anyone else.
I'm raising this money to replace all of the current concrete in the backyard, and make the whole area fully accessible to him so he can do what he loves to do. We've had quotes in between $10-$15k for the replacement, but any amount raised will go a long way to making this actually happen. We have asked his NDIS case manager if they would help in funding this, but they have said that it is outside their scope and cannot allocate any funds to this.
If you feel like this is something you'd like to help with, please donate whatever you can. No amount is too small, and every single donation is so greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
