Meet Spirit — a tiny young mare whose life has been filled with pain, neglect, and heartbreak, yet despite everything, she is still fighting to survive.

Spirit, formerly known as “Squeak,” earned her nickname because of the little squeaking sound she makes whenever someone walks behind her. It’s a small reminder that beneath the suffering, she is still a gentle young horse with a sweet nature and a spirit that refuses to give up.

At only around 3–4 years old, Spirit has already endured more than most animals should in a lifetime. She came from severe neglect and is currently in heart-breaking condition. She is underweight, weak, riddled with lice, carrying a heavy burden of worms, and her feet are in terrible condition, making every step painful.

The most devastating part of Spirit’s story is the trauma she has experienced at such a young age. Spirit previously carried a foal, but heartbreakingly, the foal died inside her and was pulled from her body without veterinary aid. The trauma from this left her with adhesions and ruptures throughout her reproductive tract, causing lasting internal damage and immense pain. Before she even had the chance to recover physically or emotionally, she was covered again and again, causing even more damage to her already fragile body.

Years of neglect and abuse have left Spirit fighting for her life. It was agreed that if we could get Spirit signed over to us, we would do the right thing and have her put to sleep, something the previous owner was advised to do over a year ago. upon the vets inspection, and Spirit demonstrating her determination to cling to life, the vet has agreed to give her six extra weeks to try and undo some of the damage caused by years of mistreatment. These next six weeks are absolutely critical to her survival.

Spirit is now under veterinary care and will be reassessed in six weeks to determine whether she can continue to recover or whether the kindest option will be to let her go peacefully due to the trauma her body has suffered.

Despite everything, this little mare has clung to life, and we want to give her every possible chance. We believe she deserves to know love, safety, and kindness — perhaps for the first time in her life.

Even if these are Spirit’s final six weeks, we are determined to make them six weeks filled with care, compassion, comfort, and dignity — everything she should have experienced from the very beginning.
