I am raising money for the spinal trauma medical bills and monthly expenses for (Ken) Corey Thomson. On June 1, Corey was cutting a limb from a tree, and the limb kicked back and knocked him from the top of the tree. He fell to the ground below and now has a broken T12 vertebrae. Spinal cord was compressed, not severed. Surgery was completed the very next morning to alleviate compression. He is was in the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit in Charlotte, NC. He has lost sensation and function below the waist. We are hoping for some improvement and are looking for aggressive physical rehabilitation, but we have a long road ahead of us. He was in the STICU for a week and a half due to the medications he has to have through a central line to keep his blood pressure elevated enough to perfuse the spinal cord. Then he was moved to a floor bed. I myself drove him from Charlotte to Atlanta when a bed was available at the renowned Shepherd Center. He stayed in Atlanta until August 14 where he graduated from the program and was able to come home to Gastonia. It took almost 2 months to get into Atrium Rehab, but we are so happy he has gotten back to rehab. We have been seeing Kelly twice a week and are making great strides in rehab. I know I got slack with the updates, working and rehab appointments will do that to you. lol. Corey and I are still trying to get the bathroom remodeled so he is able to use it. It has become a true pain. Vocational rehab was supposed to help. After 4 months of jumping through those hoops, we were denied. So we are having to rip out the garden tub and put in a shower with accessibility so it is SAFE for Corey to transfer in and out of his own bathroom.
We have had a lot of ups and a lot of downs during the last 7 months. It’s only up from here. We truly appreciate everything everyone has donated and it has been put to good use on the ramp for the house, the accessibility equipment Corey needs to function everyday, and making the doors wider in the home so Corey can move around in his own home, and so much more has been done with the love you have shown us.
Corey has devoted his life to helping people. He was a Flight Respiratory Therapist for years in Montana, Idaho, and North Carolina. He recently returned to bedside Respiratory Therapy, where he improves and even saves the lives of many on a daily basis.
