Hi! I am a student studying biomedical science in pursuit of getting into veterinary medical school. I recently got accepted into the Loop Abroad Thailand Veterinary Semester. I have applied to numerous scholarships and I am planning on working two jobs in the summer to make up the difference I have to pay in order to attend this once in a lifetime experience. Unfortunately, even with all my efforts, I still fall short.
My goal is to become an advocate for animal conservation, raise awareness, and use my creativity to come up with solutions to avert animal suffering. I aspire to reach these goals by becoming a zoological veterinarian working abroad in the field. I would like to assist with international research surrounding conservation and animal rights. I plan to become a political activist, educator, and public speaker. I can propose solutions to prevent animals from having to face endangering situations or extinction. I believe this program would bring me closer to my goals due to how specific the program is along with the privilege to study these animals in their natural habitat while being immersed in a new culture.
During my time in Thailand, I will be taking a twenty-credit hour semester throughout fourteen weeks. We travel and explore different parts of Thailand, including Chiang Mai, elephant sanctuaries, dog clinics, marine research centers, Turtle Island, and other animal facilities. One of the classes I will be taking is called “Marine Animal Anatomy, Biology, and Conservation.” This class is taught in Koh Tao, which means Turtle Island. I have always been fascinated with sea turtles and this would be a great opportunity to study and interact with various species of wildlife. Included in the curriculum is a scuba diving class to receive the license. This license is essential to the course because I will be diving, conducting research and examining the coral reef system in Koh Tao. I can later use this license to continue to conduct research on marine life. I will also be living in Elephants World, a sanctuary caring for 25 old, disabled, and abused elephants, located outside of Kanchanaburi. I will be taking “Elephant Management and Medicine,” where I will learn about elephant medicine and how to properly care for them. I will be learning and studying alongside Thai Veterinarians where I will be able to watch and participate in surgeries once I am trained on sutures. Another class offered in this program is Thailand Life and Culture, this course will expose me to the Thai culture, learn Thai conversation basics, and become oriented in the city of Chiang Mai. It is critical that I study abroad in Thailand because over the years, it has become one of the world’s largest transit hub for trafficked wildlife. Ivory, tigers, pangolin scales, sea turtles, rhinoceros horns, and many other endangered species get smuggled through Thailand. As a result of law enforcement seizing so many animals throughout the years, almost all sanctuaries across Thailand are full. I need to learn more about their efforts, laws, and regulations so that I am prepared for what is to come when I move forward with my plans. I hope to one day join the Peace Corps in Thailand to educate the youth on the importance of wildlife protection and conservation.
Thank you for being a part of my story (:
