COVID-19: MAYA PEOPLE NEED YOUR HELP!
Indigenous Maya communities in Quintana Roo need our URGENT attention!
It is of vital importance to protect indigenous Maya people, culture, language, heritage and their way of life, which safeguards biodiversity, planet's biosphere and helps combating climate change, which is crucial for all of us!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that affected the lives of everyone worldwide, indigenous Maya people are one of the most vulnerable groups, with limited or none medical equipment, no possibility of social distancing, isolation or leaving affected areas.
Throughout history, epidemics brought devastation and drastic depopulation among indigenous people, wiping out the whole villages and tribes.
Quintana Roo, Mexico is one of the most beautiful and most biodiverse areas in the world and provides home to more than 100 Maya communities.
Maya people are threatened by faster spreading of COVID-19 and higher death rate, and are highly vulnerable because they have a weaker immune system to infectious diseases.
Due to the impact of COVID-19 on Riviera Maya tourism and construction development, a lot of Maya people that were employed in the tourism & development sector, in areas that are now considered COVID-19 hotspots, are returning home to their indigenous communities where they do not have means nor opportunity for self isolation and adequate medical support.
With more than commendable efforts from the Hospitals, Health Centers, Medical Staff and municipalities of Quintana Roo, ICDO wants to provide them with more help and medical equipment to prevent and fight COVID-19 pandemic.
ICDO is in direct contact with Hospitals, Health Centers and doctors in affected areas and we are doing our best to help as much as we can!
Unfortunately, some of the medical centers responsible for Maya communities are not prepared to fight COVID-19, because there is a lack of medical equipment, masks, disinfectants, ventilators, etc., and the rest of the communities due to their remote locations do not have adequate medical support.
If we do not react in time, all those communities may be affected and/or worse, can face extincion.
Through #MayaVoice Mexico Healthcare Relief ICDO will give its best efforts to:
- Provide necessary medical equipment to the indigenous Maya communities to help fight and prevent COVID-19.
- Provide long-term medical support for Maya communities by sourcing equipment required for establishing adequate medical support to the communities.
- Provide, together with communities, municipalities, hospitals, centers and doctors, equipment to establish two-way communication that will allow timely and direct contact between patient and medical staff.
- Provide support to organization and implementation of project Kalan Je La’an: Maya Voices Phase II to ensure protection of Maya communities, culture and biodiversity in the area of Quintana Roo.
#MayaVoice Mexico Healthcare Relief COVID-19 aims to provide medical equipment to hospitals in municipalities of Quintana Roo, Mexico and possibly to 62 medical centers under their jurisdictions to ensure future betterment of medical care for more than 100 Maya communities of Quintana Roo.
ICDO, through its project Kalan Je La'an: Following the Maya Voice has a privilege to work with Maya communities in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
