Spencer has to do cranial radiation and Mayo has the equipment and specialized doctors. We showed up to Spencer's appointment to be told that we couldn't do the appointment until we met with the Financial Department. Apparently, there was an appointment set 2hrs before that I didn't know about. The department then told me I had to put down a large sum of money before Spencer was allowed to proceed. We did not have that much money. I gave them a number that would leave $100 in our account. I learned Mayo did not do any payment plans and we needed at least 80% of the funds. I told them it was impossible. No one had that type of money in their bank account. I cried, I yelled at every person I could get my hands on, I called every number I could to explain my plight. I was repeatedly told to reschedule when I had the funds. This was a key component for Spencer's recovery. Tommy was at home and started activating credit cards to get to the 80%.
We did the appointment. I started sweating, as that first appointment was well over $15k, and there wasn't even radiation. I started calling everyday to get the amount that was going to be due by her first appointment. Our insurance said they could give us half the amount if they had an itemized estimate and 2 weeks. Mayo said they could not give an itemized estimate as they wait until after the service has been performed. We started selling items. We had to come up with more than $55k. I talked to PCH if we could delay the treatment. PCH said Mayo was difficult and denies most insurance, even Ahcccs. Spencer had to start on certain day. We got a refund from Tommy's ankle doctor, we got a donation from allie's angels, we started a yard sale with donations. Tommy went to sell his truck, but was offered a very low amount that wouldn't get us to what we needed. There were plans to drive it out of town and sell it.
I talked to Spencer's nurse at Mayo right before her treatment and told her that I didn't think we could come up with the funds for Spencer's treatment in such a short period. Her nurse said that Spencer HAD to have this treatment. I later got a call from Mayo saying they could, in fact, put Spencer on a short payment plan. We gave them all we had for a down payment. It feels like we made it even though we just started. #SparkleForSpencer #spencersstars
