On November 20, 2018 Spencer Phillips was headed home from picking up his two year old son Alyster when an impaired drivergoing the opposite direction veered into their lane. Spencer turned so the driver side would take the impact to protect his son. Their truck spun and hit a second car which made them flipone and a half times and land in an embankment on the driver side door. Spencer refused help until he knew his son had been taken care of. He even walked to the ambulance so that the paramedics could tend to Alyster. Alyster escaped the wreck with only a bump on his head.
Spencer had to be flown to UAB hospital for immediate care. The doctors diagnosed him with an innumerable amount of fractures in his face from his eyebrows down which the doctors referred to as smash face. His eyes were swollen completely shut. He also had a compound fracture in his arm and a broken ankle. The doctors decided to put him on a ventilator to secure his airway. It was also decided that Spencer would be keptsedated until after the surgery on his face. On Thanksgiving Day Spencer underwent his first two surgeries on his ankle and arm. The surgeries went well but afterwards his heart rate dropped low. The next day Spencer underwent a nine hour surgery to repair his face. They started by doing a Tracheotomy so they would have better access to his face. They then repaired the bones around his eyes, reconstructed his nose, used medal plates to repair parts of his face, and wired his jaw shut.
Spencer has a long recovery process ahead of him. His family relied heavily on his pay check each week. Donations of any size are accepted and greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your prayers and donations.
