My mum’s world was turned upside down on 5/06/2024 her birthday, when she tripped over on a foot path and hurt her back and her right hip and knee. Less than a week later she fell over when she went to run from a wasps nest, damaging her left wrist, neck, shoulder and hip. A couple of days later she was in an ambulance and on the way to the PA hospital as she was in so much pain and couldn’t walk without the support of dad. PA hospital only did back, neck and brain scans to discovered a fractured L5, bulging disc's in neck and an indentation in her spinal cord, but said there is no reason she can't walk, put her on lots of opioids for pain and didn't listen to what happened to her and diagnosed FND, and that lead to her not being treated properly. A nurse took mum to the kitchen one night after 19 days in hospital and said they all think she should call Ryan's rule as they saw she was not being listened too. Ryan’s rule was implemented and that brought no change. She was transferred to sunny bank private hospital as it was a bit closer to home. She was wiend off all the opioids at her request and they gave her 4 Cortizone injections in the bottom of her spine, which she was told would help with the pain, but her body went into protection mode so an ER doctor told her when she was transferred back to PA and she could hardly stand for 2 & 1/2 weeks. She was eventually transferred to logan hospital where she was recieving physio treatment and they discovered not only the fracture in the back but also imbalance in pelvis and SI joints not moving properly. Then she was told that the hospital was sending her home. She was discharged from logan hospital with nothing other than crutches and antidepressants. We have hired wheelchair, shower seat and toilet seat, so mum can move around the house.
Mum then did Bowen therapy hoping it would help with the diagnosis that was given, but after 5 weeks and hundreds of dollars and no improvement, her doctor sent her to a physio outside the hospital system. There she had an assessment appointment with a top FND physio and another experienced physio. After the assessment they requested more scans and ultrasounds and x-rays, which confirmed what they thought was wrong. Torn ligaments in hips and damaged muscles top of left leg, that's why she can walk and they also picked up torn rottacuff, bursitis and frozen shoulder on the left shoulder. Both physios we disgusted that mum had been tossed around the hospital system like a ping pong ball, and misdiagnosed and medicated her incorrectly. They said she definitely doesn't have FND she has musculoskeletal problems. She was then wiend of the antidepressants and only takes Panadol ostio, a strong anti-inflammatory and lots of vitamins daily, which all add to the cost. Her GP did a 20 page referral to a musculoskeletal specialist which cost them $400 for the consultation, to be told she needs plasma injections at $1000 a jab. Which is going to cost thousands as she would require them in many places. She is currently doing normal physio and they have said it will be a slow recovery process, she has just started hydro therapy which is $95 for 1/2 an hour twice a week and dad got mum a treadmill to help with very slow continuous movement. Mum is making some slow steady progress, but needs help with all these medical expenses. They are turning down things that would help because of the expense, as mum is only receiving 1/2 of what she would get if she was able to work, through her income protection and dad had to give up work to care for mum as she's high falls risk.
UPDATE ON MUM:
she was diagnosed in April 2025 with aggressive breast cancer and her oncology team put her head-on into weekly rounds of chemotherapy and every three weeks immunotherapy, which she barely got over one round before being hit with another. Mums happy with her oncology team and how they were so harsh with the treatment as her last scans had amazing results. Her surgical team have taken over now and she has the operation tomorrow morning, double mastectomy and lymph nodes removed as well. she’s very scared. I will keep you all updated, thanks for all your love and support ❤️ Any and all donations for Donna Peterson would be greatly appreciated and i’d love for anyone to share this post to spread this information and hopefully help my mum❤️
