On July 24, 2024, while helping a coworker clean up after the hurricane, my dad, Scott Spearman broke his leg in a tree-trimming accident. That same month, my mom, Cathy was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, a chronic condition that causes numbness and pain in the hands and feet, making it hard to maintain mobility on her own. At this time, neither of them could move around without assistance, both needing the help of wheelchairs and family. My dad had a long recovery, moving from the use of a wheelchair and then to crutches, and was finally cleared to move around on his own in late November 2024.

Throughout this time, my mom’s mobility became worse, with many trips to specialists who could not pinpoint the cause of her neuropathy. They found high protein levels in her blood, and she was sent to an oncologist. They recommended she go to a gastroenterologist in early January before they could follow up. The day before her appointment, she fell and broke her femur while trying to move around the house. She then had to have surgery to place rods in her leg. My parents have already endured so much due to Dad’s injury and Mom’s condition, and now due to Mom’s injury, the road to recovery seemingly has no end.

She is currently staying in a rehabilitation facility to work on regaining mobility. My dad is unable to return to work at this time. My mom still needs to see many specialists, including a rheumatologist, a cardiologist, and a neurologist. I’m creating this fund to help support the purchase of at-home medical equipment such as a hospital bed and to fund doctor’s appointments, as well as to support monthly bills while my parents’ income is limited.
