On March 5 2021, Gregory Small Jr. attempted to take his own life during a manic episode. His mother called 911 to help de-escalate the event and save his life. When police arrived, Gregory was cutting himself with a knife.

Gregory was shot four times while he was running from the rear of his home to the front, which placed him into critical medical condition. Gregory is being charged with a felony assault. Sangamon County State’s attorney Dan Wright said in a news release that Chatham IL police Officer Adam Hahn was justified in using deadly force and will not face charges.

Gregory was raised in the village of Chatham IL. He is an active member of Cherry Hills church where he has attended with his family since childhood. He is a self taught coder and an Eagle Scout.

All members of our community deserve to feel safe, valued, and respected. We need officers that are capable of responding to mental health crisis. We must speak out and advocate with members in our community.

Gregory has undergone several surgeries and is currently home recovering under the care of in home nurses after several weeks in the hospital.

Funds will be used for legal and medical expenses as well as lost wages and living expenses.
