Speakerbox: Southwark's Children in Care Council

Donation protected
In Southwark, one of London's most vibrant and diverse areas, there is a special project called SpeakerBox. SpeakerBox is Southwark’s Children in Care Council (CICC) and gives young care experienced people the chance to speak up, share their stories, and make a real difference. This project is all about helping young people feel heard and valued in their community.

What is SpeakerBox?

SpeakerBox is run by young people, for young people aged 5 to 25 in Southwark. It's a place where they can develop new skills, get creative, and talk about things that really matter to them. Whether it’s making podcasts, videos, or blogs, SpeakerBox gives young people a chance to share their opinions and have their voices listened to. It’s all about helping them get involved in their community and show others what they care about.

What Does SpeakerBox Do?

At SpeakerBox, the goal is to make sure young people feel confident and empowered. Here’s how it works:

Building Confidence: Through workshops and training, young people learn to become better leaders and public speakers.
Getting Creative: They can try out different creative activities like making videos, writing blogs, or even starting their own podcasts.
Community Action: Young people get involved in important discussions about what’s happening in Southwark, and their opinions are taken seriously by local leaders.
Personal Growth: It’s also a place to learn life skills that can help in the future, like how to prepare for a job or lead a project.

Speakerbox are fundraising for a variety of things that young people have identified and they will vote on how any funds are spent. Ideas so far include:

  • Christmas event for care experienced young people
  • Podcasting equipment
  • Creative workshops such as screen printing, graffiti, music and photography
  • Residential trip for younger cohort of Speakerbox members
  • Event to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Speakerbox
  • Film making workshops
  • Funding for cooking group for care experienced young people with additional needs
  • Theatre trips/excursions that help with personal growth or new experiences that young people often miss out on as a result of being in the care system
  • Christmas gifts for care experienced young people
