We need 170'000 mexican pesos (which is about USD 9'000) for our next campaign to spay/neuter 350 dogs and cats.
Hi everyone
I'm Katja from Switzerland, one of many volunteers from "SOS el arca", an animal shelter in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I'm volunteering with different tasks at the shelter and also at our monthly spay and neuter campaigns for streetdogs / streetcats and dog/cats from local people, who can't afford the costs to spay/neuter their animals.
The situation of street dogs and cats in Playa is dire and has become an emergency. The Street dog population has risen in the last years from 10,000 animals to almost 40,000.
All of them suffer a horrible destiny that is unseen by the tourist population.
How did this happen?
Playa del Carmen offers opportunities for work for people all over Mexico and the world. With Covid, all hotels, businesses, and almost every profession had to stop activities. Pets were abandoned on the streets as the city shut down and people returned to their hometowns. Shelters were full and had no money to support them all. Puppies and kittens are thrown in garbage bins, dumped in the jungle, or left on the highway and streets to get hit by cars, or worse, tied somewhere as the owner leaves.
There is only one way to stop this – spaying and neutering these animals.
Thus, in 2022 our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and sheltering street dogs, was expanded. It includes massive free spay and neuter campaigns each month in a different impoverished community of Playa del Carmen. The cost of these campaigns for Sos el Arca includes the veterinarian services for operating, the flights, the medicines, accommodation for 2 days each month and other various costs.
Each campaign so far has been fully funded by a different generous donor who believes, same as we do, that this is key to the solution. To keep our work going, we need donations for our next spay and neuter campaign. With the amount of 170'000 mexican pesos, which is around USD 9000, we can spay and neuter 350 dogs and cats within two days.
Since the start in february 2022 over 11'000 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered in our monthly campaigns! Please help us to keep our mission going with giving a donation for our next campaign. Thank you very much!
