I'm asking for your support to complete a Spartan Triple Trifecta in 2017. That's 9 races totaling 69-87 miles with 222-261 obstacles. Whatever you give, I will match for charity (at a rate up to 200%). See below for details.
Back in South Africa, the boys in my school's 7th grade class spent 8 days in veld school, a kind of adventure and leadership training camp. We were out in the wild, being boys, running obstacles, overcoming challenges, building shelter, climbing mountains, orienteering, getting filthy. Some of the best days of my life! Ever since, I've had a sort of primal lust for adventure. Give me some terrain, some mud, something to scale and I'm in my element. Maybe that kind of exercise is what I have missed most about leaving my country and my childhood behind. You just don't experience the same kind of wild abandon in suburbia or adulthood, unless of course you go a-looking.
And a-looking I went. In 2011 I discovered obstacle course racing (OCR) and I fell hard. Since that first Warrior Dash, I've completed a Rugged Maniac, 2 Tough Mudders, and 8 Spartan races (including two Trifectas in 2014 and 2015). The thing about OCR, and particularly Spartan Race, is that it gets you out of your comfort zone into challenging situations, and forces you to dig deep and focus to overcome obstacles that you may not see coming. I feel trepidation every time I'm out there, and I always have my doubts. Am I strong enough? Do I have what it takes? What if I fail? What if I'm not ready? But I look it as an opportunity to shift my frame of reference, discover what I'm capable of, and expand my boundaries. And that, I believe, makes me better able to face life's challenges. OCR is a means to fashion myself into a better, more confident, more capable man.
So time to go big. In 2017, my goal is to complete a Spartan 3T (Triple Trifecta) Delta.
What the Spartan 3T Delta entails:
3 x Spartan Sprint (3-5 miles/20-23 obstacles)
3 x Spartan Super (8-10 miles/24-29 obstacles)
3 x Spartan Beast (12-14 miles/30-35 obstacles)
On my way there, I also mean to complete the Devil's Trifecta (Pennsylvania Sprint/Virginia Super/Vermont Beast - all in the Blue Mountains), perhaps the toughest trifecta in the eastern United States.
I can't do it without your support. The money you donate to this campaign will enable me to cover an annual pass, registration fees, and travel expenses. I have selected events with an eye for limiting costs as much as possible. No extravagance here. (If you were planning to buy me a Christmas gift or a birthday gift, please consider supporting me this way instead. )
But your impact doesn't stop there, because I am stoked to be matching your donations for charity (up to $5,000). The more you support me in this endeavor, the higher the match rate, and the greater the contribution to charity. If you would like the match to support your favorite US501(c)(3), please specify in your comments and I'll be happy to make it happen. Otherwise, I will donate to Invictus Foundation, a community-based nonprofit whose mission is to advance the youth and at-risk youth of the Sacramento region through programs that promote self-development, provide educational guidance, incorporate sports training, and encourage success (https://invictusfoundation.net/).
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity. In a way, you're helping me become a better version of myself.
And I hope some of you will join me out there in the mud to see for yourself!
