This post is for my son, Damon Blair Fikes, who has always willingly reached out to help family, neighbors and friends. It is difficult to observe him in this his new normal. Over the period of about 6+ months this robust fellow went from approximately 265 pounds to a low of 155 pounds. April 30, Emergency Responders discovered him in his home, totally disoriented and extremely weak. The next 5 weeks he experienced 3 consecutive hospitals, 1 rehab facility, was discharged on June 4, readmitted June 6 - 9.
His diagnoses included: sepsis, mrsa, diabetes, hypertension, lupus and cry-fibrinogenemia (a rare blood disorder which caused his immune system to attack his limbs). Gangrene affected his fingers after a traumatic blow to his hand. The right hand has 3 gangrenous fingers, the left hand has 1 and a partial. Infections developed on his feet and legs and neuropathy in his right foot impedes his walking ability.
He's been without a paycheck since the end of April for lack of leave due to 16+ months of declining health. Damon is a 59-year-old Air Force Veteran, a Department of Navy Supply Technician; a diligent hard worker (mechanic, carpenter, gardener, tree trimmer, painter), helping family, neighbors, friends, and anyone needing help. He was the major caregiver for his recently deceased 79-year-old uncle (the last of his dad’s 8 siblings).
Federal leave donations are requested. He needs help with mortgage, utilities, insurances, and day-to-day living expenses.
At this time the affected fingers on his right hand have been amputated, the left hand is still to be done. Help is needed.
