Charlie's Top Surgery!

**UPDATE as of 1/29/20**

Hey everybody. Good news and bad news. The good news is that my appeal was approved, and my insurance was switched back to Kaiser and will be having surgery on February 18th. Kaiser originally told me my date was cancelled, but my surgeon's scheduler called me personally and was able to switch my Feb 3rd surgery date with someone else's later date of Feb 18th . Bad news is our kaiser plans through my job have changed for 2020. Surgery was going to cost a total of $25 with the amazing coverage we used to have. With my new plan, I have a $750 deductible, plus 20% of the cost of surgery. Kaiser says my surgery costs $21, 311, with 20% being $4,262. So in total, surgery with my new plan is going to cost $5,012 instead of the original $25. So yeah, I dunno, that's where I'm at. Thanks so much to everybody for your help before this. Idk what to do now other than share this, but I appreciate y'all.

IT'S HAPPENING! With the help of health insurance provided through my job working as an Emergency Medical Technician, I’m finally able to have a surgery I’ve been waiting for since I came out as a transgender man in 2010. I’ve spent the last ten years transitioning physically, socially, and spiritually. While becoming the man I am today has brought me so much happiness, I’ve continued to struggle with years of crippling discomfort in my body. Top surgery, a chest reconstruction surgery to masculinize the chest, was not covered by insurance for many of the years I’ve been out as a transgender man. But luckily, that’s changed!
I’ve worked for 3 years (and countless 24/48 hour shifts) responding to 911 calls in Los Angeles county, and serving my community has brought me pride. However, making minimum wage as an EMT has made it incredibly difficult for me to save beyond the cost of surgery. Therefore, I’ve been unable to save the additional cost-of-living funds, for the post-op time I’ll need to take off work to heal. As EMTs, our jobs are incredibly physical. We often end up carrying people 2-3 times our weight down multiple flights of stairs. Because of this, I’ll be taking 8 weeks off of work to allow my body the time it needs to heal, in order to resume the work that I do!
With my surgery coming up on February 3rd (AHHH!), every donation made during this month will go toward my post op recovery time away from work. As a SUPER SPECIAL incentive, anyone who donates $50 or more will receive a thank you card and an Extremely Important Very Good Top Secret wallet sized photo to put on your fridge! However, any donation helps, and if you aren’t able to donate-- sharing the fundraiser on your social media is just as helpful! Thank you so much for your time :) and happy new year!
