Hello, my name is Katherine Vanegas. I hold a degree in Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports. I'm 33 years old, Colombian, and I arrived in the United States with my husband on April 3, 2024, seeking asylum.

I’m still in shock. What I first thought was gastritis, and later an H. pylori infection, turned out to be something that completely changed my life. I couldn't eat properly, felt full very quickly, suffered from nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. I lost 44 pounds (20 kg) in just a few months.

I've experienced too many emotions in a very short time — leaving my family, friends, job, and roots; adapting to a new country, culture, and language. But the hardest moment came exactly one year and one day after arriving in the U.S. On April 4, 2025, I was diagnosed with stage IV HER2+ stomach cancer, with metastasis to my ovaries, omentum, peritoneum, and bones.

I’ve been to the emergency room several times. To diagnose me, doctors performed a CT scan, a paracentesis for ascites, blood markers, and an endoscopy to biopsy the primary tumor located in my stomach (which explained why I couldn't eat well).

In oncology, I was told that my life expectancy was about two years, due to the type and stage of the cancer. However, they also said that everything could change depending on how the treatment progresses. With love and determination, I told my doctor I would heal through the power of God.

A port was implanted below my right collarbone, and I am currently receiving a biweekly combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. After the port was placed, I felt pain in my neck near the device. An ultrasound revealed acute embolism and thrombosis of the right internal jugular vein. Since then, I’ve been taking anticoagulants.

A few weeks later, I returned to the ER with severe stomach pain that even morphine couldn’t relieve. I had a CT scan and then an X-ray with contrast to rule out a bowel obstruction. They identified something called an ileus.

My medical bills have reached $53,000 so far, including tests, hospitalizations, emergency visits, and oncology. I have no health insurance and have already applied for financial assistance from both St. Thomas Hospital and Rutherford County Oncology. I'm still waiting for a response.

I also need help covering ongoing costs like medications, transportation, supplements, organic food, and rent — as I am currently unable to work due to my condition.

Aun me encuentro en asombro, lo que empecé creyendo era una gastritis y luego una infección de helycobacter, termino siendo algo que cambio mi vida por completo, no podía comer bien, me sentía llena rápidamente, sufría nauseas, vomito y cansancio, perdí 20 kilos o 44 libras en muy poco meses.

He vivido demasiadas emociones juntas en muy poco tiempo, dejar mi familia, mis amigos, mi trabajo, mis raíces, cambiar de país, de cultura e idioma. Pero el momento mas difícil fue justamente un año y un día después de llegar a estados unidos, el 4 de abril de 2025, me diagnosticaron cáncer de estómago HER2+ fase IV, con metástasis en ovarios, omental, peritoneal y huesos.

He estado en emergencias en varias ocasiones, para diagnosticarme primero me hicieron un ct scan, paracentesis por ascitis, marcadores en sangre y una endoscopia para tomar biopsia del tumor principal alojado en el estomago (por eso no podía comer bien).

En oncología me dijeron que mi pronostico de vida era de 2 años debido al tipo de cáncer y la fase en la que me encontraba, pero que todo podía variar dependiendo del avance del tratamiento. Yo con amor y determinación le dije a mi doctor que iba a sanar con el poder de dios.

Me implantaron un puerto debajo de la clavícula derecha y actualmente estoy recibiendo un tratamiento entre quimioterapia e inmunoterapia quincenal. luego de la instalación del puerto sentí un dolor en el cuello cerca del dispositivo, me hicieron un ultrasonido y encontraron que tenia embolia aguda y trombosis de la vena yugular interna derecha, desde ese momento tomo anticoagulantes.

Semanas después regrese a emergencias por un fuerte dolor en el estomago, el cual ni la morfina lograba calmar del todo, me hicieron una tomografía y luego rayos x con contraste para saber si se trataba de una obstrucción intestinal, e identificaron algo llamado íleo.

Mis facturas médicas suman en el momento 53.000 dólares entre exámenes, hospitalización, emergencias y oncología no tengo seguro médico y ya solicite la ayuda financiera tanto en el Hospital St. Thomas como en oncología del condado de Rutherford, sigo esperando respuesta.

También necesito cubrir gastos como medicamentos, transporte, suplementos, alimentos orgánicos y renta debido a que en mi estado no puedo trabajar aun.
