Southside Mural

About a year ago, I had a vision for a mural on the Southside that would celebrate the history of the area. With permission and support from the building owner, Palmer Nackard to move forward with it, I reached out to artist Jetsonorama, who was onboard and brought on Kill Joy as a collaborating artist. It was decided that the Southside Mural would celebrate the African American community and their contributions to Flagstaff’s growth and development. We all began the work of coordinating communication with community members and groups such as The Lived Black Experience, Dom Flemons, Dr. Guthrie, Minister Sims, Charles Flemons, Coral Evans, and Jabarha Nichols. Jetsonorama and Kill Joy dove deep into people's stories and the history of the contributions African Americans made to Flagstaff. Though the image of the mural in the GoFundMe is only to convey the subject matter, everything Jetsonorama and Kill Joy create is done with integrity and intention. Their art serves as a time machine, allowing us a window into another time, while also honoring the present, which we would not have without the past. As Flagstaff changes, it is important to not forget its roots, and not let history be lost on us. This is where I'm asking for help from the community, this project has been approved for a City of Flagstaff Beautification in Action grant. This is a partnership with Palmer Nackard, the artists, Beautification and the community. Grant funds will be released once we reach 60% of our fundraising goal, which will help with supplies and labor that the grant amount does not cover. Anything above and beyond the set fundraising goal will also go toward enhancements for the mural. The mural will go up on the back of 9 E. Cottage St. in the alley past Evans Fish and Chips. The goal is to raise funds by mid-August so the wall can be prepped and the mural can be started the first week of September. The image of the wall is not a replica of what the wall will look like but rather an idea, as the processes of Jetsonorama and Kill Joy are very organic.
