Hi! I’m Reet Narang, a 21-year-old international film student from India, currently in my fourth year of BFA Cinema and Media Arts – Film Production at York University.

I come from a military family with no ties to the film world — just a lifelong passion for cinema and storytelling that’s driven me to carve my own path in this industry. Moving to Canada to study film was a huge leap of faith, but it’s been the most rewarding journey of my life.

Since coming here, I’ve worked on over 30 short films, exploring roles in Production Design and Production Management, and currently work as a Studio Support Assistant at York’s Equipment Room. I also had the privilege of interning with Fae Pictures, where I learned how powerful authentic, diverse storytelling can be.

My thesis film, Baksa, is a culmination of everything I’ve learned and everything I’ve dreamt of creating. It’s a deeply personal story that reflects my experiences, my identity, and my love for cinema. I’m beyond excited to bring it to life — and I’d be so grateful for your support in making that happen.

In the wake of loss, a mother has built her life around strength and control — and expects her daughter to do the same. They share a home and a routine, but not a relationship. While the mother talks, her daughter obeys.

When her daughter experiences heartbreak for the first time, the mother is confronted with something she has avoided for years: vulnerability. In trying to comfort her daughter, she is forced to face her own unspoken grief and the love she lost.

Through shared memories, honesty, and moments of quiet revelation, the two women begin to bridge the distance between them. They learn to understand and support each other — not just as mother and daughter, but as two people discovering how to love, lose, and heal.

Baksa is a heartfelt exploration of family, emotional resilience, and the bonds that are strengthened when we allow ourselves to be seen.

My directorial journey began when I made my first short film to apply to film school — with no technical knowledge, but complete honesty. That experience shaped my philosophy as a filmmaker: a film doesn’t need grandeur or complexity to resonate; it needs sincerity. I believe the most powerful stories come from an authentic understanding of human emotion.

Baksa embodies that belief. While inspired by my mother, the events of the film are entirely fictional. What draws me to this story is its universality — the quiet, unspoken sacrifices that define the relationship between a mother and daughter.

Through this film, I want to explore how mothers often suppress their vulnerability to protect their children, and how children do the same to comfort their mothers — a cycle of love expressed through silence. My aim is to capture that emotional symmetry with intimacy and restraint, crafting a film that feels deeply human, deeply familiar, and quietly profound.
