My name is Denise, and I’ve lived in Saginaw my whole life. In 2024, my world changed forever when my son was murdered in the streets of our city. Cooking was always our special bond—he loved my ribs and fried chicken, and nothing made me happier than seeing him enjoy a good meal. Losing him was the hardest thing I’ve ever faced, but it also reminded me how precious life is and how important it is to follow your dreams.
For over 30 years, I’ve worked in the restaurant business—managing, training, opening, and closing restaurants. I’m known as a bit of a food critic in town, always looking for the best flavors and presentation. I currently work full-time at Kroger in Bridgeport, but my dream has always been to open a soulful taste restaurant that brings people together. Money has always been tight, and starting a business feels out of reach, but I’ve done my research and know exactly what I need to get started: a food truck, permits, and equipment.
I want my food truck to be a pillar in the community, serving affordable, soulful meals to families and kids who can’t always afford high food prices. I love people, and people love me—I just want to do what I do best and cook for my community. If you’ve ever dreamed of rising above a tough situation, I hope my story inspires you. I want to be the next Mama Lillie of Saginaw, making a difference for my grandkids and my neighbors. I can’t do this alone—I’m stepping out on faith and asking for your help, whether it’s through a donation or sharing my story. Together, we can make this dream a reality.
