My name is Maisie and at the end of March this year I will be travelling to Canada to participate in Soul Edge, a three month leadership course. The intention is that each of us on the team would be surrounded by and be part of cultivating community that is focussed on pursuing God in the everyday, learning how to lead ourselves well in order that we might be equipped to lead others, in whatever way God has for us individually.

One of the course focuses is adventure, the idea being that we experience being pushed to stretch ourselves and to grow: in mind, body and our walk with Jesus. While I’m out there the weeks will be packed with teaching, worship, discipleship, fitness and adventure. We will each be a part of creating a Gospel-centred culture, learning to instil Christlike rhythms in our weekly lives, such as a regular Sabbath, each Monday.

What will I be doing?

Daily there will be worship, a run, a workout and two teaching sessions. At the weekend there’ll be a whole day of adventure and Sundays we’ll be involved in serving on team at Northgate Church, getting practical ministry experience.

In the evenings we’ll spend time together, the cooking and household duties are shared and we’ll also be involved in church home groups.

Towards the end of the course we’ll be going on a mission trip to a remote community on Vancouver Islands' west coast. In our time there we will be helping to lead community projects and youth and kids clubs, supporting long-standing missionaries as we work alongside them.

Why am I doing it?

I found out about Soul Edge at the end of the summer 2023 and felt I wanted to apply, pushing at the door to see what might come of it. Now a few months down the line, an interview and an accepted offer later, I’ve booked my flights! In part of my application I said that “I know this is a bold claim but I want to be laid bare for Jesus. I want to be unravelled by Holy Spirit in such a way that I can starkly encounter the foundations of my faith, to grow in relationship with Jesus that I would understand how to allow Him to help me in learning His truth for my life and my identity.

I want to grow in my hunger for reading God’s word and to instil Christ-centred rhythms into my daily life.

To have the opportunity to stretch the muscle of surrendering, and trusting God with everything: practicalities, my heart, body and mind to learn what comes of the adventure of stepping out in faith, that he would show me what I cannot foresee in the plans he has for me.”
