On January 25th, a tailings dam collapse near Brumadinho, in Brazil’s Minas Giras state, led to the flooding and destruction of nearby communities in close proximity to Vale’s Feijão mine. More than 400 Vale employees and contractors perished or are still unaccounted for. 5 Sotreq technicians and the wife of a Sotreq employee remain missing. After more than week of intensive search and rescue efforts, the likelihood of survivors remains slim.
As this terrible event has unfolded, Caterpillar has remained in close contact with Sotreq and Vale to offer both our condolences and support.
The Caterpillar Global Mining family is built around a few core principles, one of which is its People. People are what make us successful. People are what bind us together.
As Sotreq and the Brazilian mining community begin to rebuild their lives, we can play a role in helping them. Our friends and colleagues from Sotreq need not only our moral support but our financial assistance as they grapple with the reality of lost family members.
The Caterpillar Go To Market Team seeks your support in providing needed assistance to the 6 Sotreq families that were directly affected by this tragedy.
Our intention is to raise $50,0000, an amount that will be directly provided to the affected families via Sotreq’s foundation. We hope that this sum will ease the financial burden as our colleagues contend with their new reality.
Below is the message which Sotreq has released this week:
We received with great sadness the confirmation of the death of Gustavo Sousa Junior, Rodney Sander Paulino Oliveira and Felipe José de Oliveira Almeida. They were among the five collaborators of Sotreq missing after the tragedy of Brumadinho (MG).
Gustavo, 37 years, leaves his wife and son. He was a mechanic and worked for 12 years and five months at the company. Rodney, 27 years, leave the wife. He was a mechanic and worked for a year and 10 months at the company. Felipe, 27 years, leaves his wife and two children. He was a mechanic and worked for a year and 10 months at the company. As has happened since the confirmation of the rupture of the dam, where the collaborators provided outsourced service to Vale, our efforts are geared to support their families
The Caterpillar family is united in our support of Brazil and Sotreq during these difficult times.

Who you are and where you’re from:
My name is Brian Boitano and I am an employee of Caterpillar. I have been working as part of Caterpillar Global Mining since 2007. During this time, I have worked with our mining dealers and customers around the world, living and working in North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia, and throughout Central and East Asia .
I am an American citizen from California, currently based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Your relationship or contact to the parties you're raising funds for
The Mining community is small. The official Caterpillar dealer in Brazil, Sotreq, is not just our distributor but part of our family. I have worked, collaborated, and met many members of the Sotreq team over the years as part of visits to Brazil, projects, and conferences. They hosted me during a trip to Brazil for work in 2011. I have visited the very area affected by the tailings dam collapse.
How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible)
The families will spend the money as they require for essentials. With their primary care giver no longer alive, these funds will help with any and all family expenses
Your withdrawal plan to get the funds from the campaign to the ultimate beneficiary/ies
Funds will be sent through the Caterpillar Global Mining regional team in Brazil and given directly to the family of the Sotreq employees affected by the disaster.
