I met Sarah the night before she married my cousin Matt, almost 6 years ago. I was told she had Type 1 Diabetes and poor eye sight. She was diagnosed at the age of 4.
Over the years our friendship has grown and I have learned more about Sarah’s medical history. During her pregnancy 3 ½ years ago she was diagnosed with Preeclampsia and Toxemia. While she didn’t have any swelling ,she developed Diabetic Macular Edema and Diabetic Retinopathy, rendering her mostly blind. Matt, her husband needed to feed her and take care of her in every way.
More recently, Sarah was told that her kidneys were functioning at 17% and would eventually fail completely without a transplant. The doctor suggested to help prolong her life, she should get a double transplant, so not only would she be getting a new kidney but also a pancreas.
The reason I am setting up this gofundme page is because Sarah and her family mean the world to me. We have become so close, and talk on the phone for hours, numerous times during the week. Matt might need to decrease his hours at work or possibly work from home to care for his wife and daughter. For the first 6-8 weeks after her surgery, Sarah will not be allowed to drive, do laundry, or lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. The only time she will be allowed to go outside, during this time, is going to and from her doctor appointments. She will not be allowed to open any windows in her house, and will mostly remain shut in.
Sarah will need someone to help take care of her daughter at home, and to take Sarah to all of her weekly appointments. She has also told me that her co-pays after insurance will be roughly $200-$400 per month, for the rest of her life. When I heard that, my jaw dropped! Those numbers are enough to stress anyone out! When Sarah gets the call for the transplants, she will be in the hospital for possibly up to 2 weeks, during that time I would like to have her carpets steamed and air ducts cleaned, so she can come home to a cleaner home.
Sarah is not only a member of my family, but my best friend. I can’t stand to see her suffer through any of this. I am asking that all my family and friends share this with everyone you know. Please join me in lifting up Sarah and her family in prayer. Any support or financial gifts you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart,
Lisa
