The small riverside village of Bukit Lawang is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia at the entrance of the Gunung Leuser National Park, house for wonderful Sumatran Orangutans (it is actually one of the 2 only places in the world where you can observe Orangutans in the wild). But this beautiful little village is also home of many adorable local people, always smiling and helping eachothers!
Everyone in this tourist village rely mainly on tourism, from the guesthouses owners and staff, trekking guides, assistants, cookers and cleaning staff to the little farmers, local craftsmen, tuk tuk drivers, drivers... However due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, the National Park and all the village as been closed t tourism already since almost 3 months ... Thus local people have no income since almost 3 months and with no help from the government they are struggling to support their families and to fulfill some basics needs such as eating.
My name is Laura. I stayed at Bukit Lawang at Sumatra Orangutan Explore last summer and I was treated as a member of the community, even as a member of a family. This place, its people's humility and respect for nature...it captivated me....and so did to everyone that has ever reached the place.
This is a call to everyone who loves nature, who loves animals and specially Orangutans and who is in a safer position to help each other. In times of need, sharing is really caring, and this people need us right now!!! This is story about people, with names and lives.
An Indonesian family mainly rely on rice, noodles, eggs, cooking oil and vegetables to eat. Vegetables are quite cheap (0,50-2€ and some people are lucky to grow their own veggies, thus we want to focus on the other basic food supplies that are more expensive and that every single Indonesian family needs to buy in order and to survive.
The food parcels we will give include the following basic food supplies:
-10kg of rice (7€)
-40 packages of noodles (3€)
-30 eggs (3€)
-1L of cooking oil (1,20€)
-Kecap manis (Sweet soya sauce) (1€)
-1kg of sugar (1,20€)
So as you can see people don't need much to live, with only 16€ we can supply a family from 2 to 3 weeks according its size.
16€ might not seems much for us, but for the Indonesian families it's a lot especially during this tough situation. That is why every donation, even the smallest ones, matters! You can make a big difference in the local community by only helping with a few euros!
We are raising this campaing with the help of all guests and people loving Bukit Lawang making the money arrive through Sumatra Orangutan Explore (totally trustful and first hand contact, no intermediaries, from people to the people).
BUKIT LAWANG PEOPLE NEEDS US!!
WE MADE OUR MOVE, ARE YOU GOING TO DO YOURS?
Thank you from all Bukit Lawang people's heart.
You are all amazing!!!
