I'm Jasmene and I'm here to tell you about my friend, Sophie.
Sophie had two choices. Neither of them were great...but only one of them saves her life. And Sophie's Choice is to LIVE.
Sophie has triple negative breast cancer at the age of forty. No cancer is good..but this type takes no prisoners. She had a front row seat to her mother's choice not to seek treatment and die young of the same disease. Sophie is doing the damn treatment. She is not going to let some rogue cells take her life. Bring on the chemotherapy, bring on the radiation, bring on the mastectomy. Whatever it takes.
She is an incredible single mom to three teenagers. She works full time running a car repair facility in Boulder. She has health insurance. She owns a house and a car. She pays her taxes. And yet, she can't afford to have cancer. What is wrong with this system? You can do everything you are supposed to do as an invested member of society...and when you get too sick to keep that up? Too bad, so sad.
Sophie doesn't want to need our help.
Cancer doesn't care what she wants.
Please help me help my friend be able to take time off when she needs it during this long process. Please help me buy her a nice wig and headscarves. Please help me buy her kids' dinner when the chemo makes her too tired to cook. Please help me put gas in her car. Please give her some wiggle room. Please help.
Thanks.
Jasmene
