Sophie's trip to Korea

Donation protected
Hi!

My name is Sophie. When I moved to Seattle from a small town in Idaho in 2010, my life was changed.

Being surrounded by so many cultures on a day-to-day basis was amazing to me, and I was eager to learn more about every different culture I encountered.

When I met a group of students from Korea on a summer camp trip, I was fascinated with the language barrier, and wanted to learn some Korean to be able to communicate with them. During that week, I learned a few words and phrases, and was completely hooked. I got home, hopped on my computer, and started to teach myself the Korean alphabet (한글).

From that time on, Korean just seemed to stick. The rich culture, amazing food, and fascinating experiences kept me learning. I taught myself for two years, and then began working with a tutor.

As a freshman in high school, I enrolled in the Korean Language Intensive program at the University of Washington. I spent two months learning an academic year’s worth of Korean curriculum. I passed the class with a 4.0 – one of the top grades in my class!

This summer, I’ve enrolled in a World Learning Peace Studies program  that will take me to South Korea to study peace relations between the two Koreas, and learn more about Korean culture. Global connections and international citizenship are bringing our world together like never before. This trip is an amazing opportunity for firsthand experience of differing cultural dynamics.  When I attend college, I plan on pursuing studies in International Relations – including peace studies between North and South Korea.

I am requesting donations to help fund this trip. I will share updates and photos from the trip. And upon my return, I would be delighted to make a presentation to funders to share my experience of Korea, and everything that I have learned!

Thank you!
