Sophie Smile

Hi All! So this is Our dear friend Carrie  Glans and her Family. She’s been married to Shawn for 14 years and together 25 years. They have a daughter Abby that's 19 and a daughter Sophie that is 14 years old. Sophie was unfortunately diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in February of this year of 2020. It is called Diffuse Sclerosing Papillary that is a rare aggressive form of thyroid cancer. Sophie has had 2 surgeries. One being a Thyroidectomy at Albany Medical in March. The Second one was in Boston In May of 2020. She had a right  Radical neck dissection. They removed 56 lymph nodes and many of them were positive for cancer. After she healed from that she had her first radioactive Iodine treatment in July of 2020. She was suppose to follow up in January of 2021 for a full body scan to see if the radioactive iodine treatments killed the cancer. But  Sophie is getting another ultrasound next week with possible Bilateral biopsy because there are some questionable areas on both sides of her neck that are questionable because of swelling. They have traveled to Boston Children's Hospital many times for appointments and treatments. Also, when Sophie was getting treatments, they couldn't find affordable accommodations at night because the Ronald McDonald house was full, so they traveled daily from South Glens Falls to Boston for the treatment for a week . Carrie (Sophie's mom) has reluctantly taken 3 month sabbatical because of the emotional and physical stress on Sophie and the rest of the Family. It's way too much to bear  while working full time.
