Help Sophia Garza’s Fight to Beat Cancer
Donation protected
You never think it will happen to you. Especially not at such a young age. You see so many of your family, friends, friends of friends, or know someone who has gone through it. The dreaded word - cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25. I thought I could get through this on my own and have kept it between close friends and family. However, it has gotten to the point where I need your help.
Over the last 5 months, I stopped working to fulfill my internship hours to earn my degree. I expected to go straight to work as soon as I graduated but unfortunately as I undergo treatment I am not able to work. I have exhausted all of my savings and resources and I cannot afford my cancer treatments alone. I am reaching out to ask for your help in joining me on my health journey. Your donation will not only help me with the outrageous medical bills, but will also support me through this difficult time and allow me to come out stronger than ever before. Your support means everything to me!
Who I Am
My name is Sophia Garza, I am 26 years old and was born and raised in Southern California. I am the youngest of 2, with one older brother, daughter to my amazing parents and dog mom to 3 sweet babies. I currently live in Rancho Cucamonga, CA where I undergo active cancer treatment at City of Hope.
Some of you may not know me personally, so I will share a bit about myself:
I absolutely love learning. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from University of California Riverside and just graduated from University of Southern California (USC) with a Master's in Applied Psychology. I even expect to continue furthering my education in the future. Prior to taking time off to complete my Master's degree I bartended my way through college. Unfortunately, as I undergo treatment I cannot even work part time.
I am passionate about all animals and enjoy spending time with any fur baby I encounter. That being said, I am also vegan and love trying new vegan food! I also love going to any live music events and festivals as music has always been a therapy in my life. I enjoy yoga and meditation and I especially love doing these at the beach. The beach is my happy place and I look forward to going when I am able to.
Diagnosis
I was diagnosed February 19, 2019 with Stage IB Invasive and In-Situ Ductal Adenocarcinoma. 11 days before my 26th birthday. Next came the whirlwind of thoughts and feelings about what my future would be. What type of treatment would I need? How will I feel? Will I ever be normal? Will it come back? Will I be able to graduate in May 2019? Will I be able to go to work during treatment? How much does treatment cost? Can I afford it?
Where I am Now
I underwent surgery in March 2019. Everything went well. I walked across the stage earning my Master’s degree on May 10, 2019. I started my first chemotherapy session 4 days later on May 14, 2019 and am expected to receive treatments from now through October 2019. The next steps after that will be radiation treatment as well as hormone therapy.
Why I Need Your Help
Cancer treatment is expensive, regardless of if you have the best insurance. My insurance only covers a fraction of the total costs and the bills are never ending. I need your help to assist me in my financial needs in order to continue receiving treatment.
This is definitely scary for me to expose something so vulnerable about myself but I really do need your help to fight and get through this battle. As some of you know, I am not one to ask for help but I really do need it. I appreciate all of the love and support I have received thus far and forever be grateful for you all.
Donations
I have included a breakdown of the costs associated with my treatment and how your donations will be used to contribute to my health. I have large outstanding debts as well as other smaller monthly bills so any amount of donation will be greatly appreciated.
