Sophia’s car accident recovery journey

Sophia was in a car accident Saturday morning January 8th. Some people keep asking about a go fund me page. I have been very hesitant to start one. I decided to because she does have her own household bills to maintain while she is at home with me. As time passes I realize it will be hard for me to cover them as I myself am just getting back to work. Sophia being 18 years old had just moved out on her own attending local community college and maintaining her own household and bills with a good friend roommate. With her injuries Sophia can’t work for months to a year as she earned money being a yoga instructor and dog walker. Sophia was driving and thinks something broke in the front end of car. Her car flipped - rolled 6-8 times and she was ejected out of her car through the sunroof. I was told many helped her at the accident scene in many ways even covered her with blankets to keep her warm also a off duty firefighter and Doctor helped. She was not alone one of her best friends was with and thankfully went home safe that night with minor injuries. Sophia was in Iowa City hospital for two weeks. She then came back to our hometown and stayed a week in rehab center in one of our hospitals. She has now moved back home with me, her mother. Let me share Sophia has suffered multiple breaks in her pelvic area, her sacrum (bottom of spine that attaches to pelvis) transverse on the L5,  broke knee cap, and fibula, along with the internal bleeding that kept her in icu for days. She had 3 wonderful teams of doctors in Iowa City 2 of which did surgery. She has a internal rod in her belly that is screwed in the pelvis and her sacrum is attached to her spine with hardware also. Her hardware will come out and will not be permanent and she will require one or two surgery’s for removal. As of now she is non weight bearing on both legs for 3 months to start. We are very lucky Sophia is still with us and I am thankful everyday! Any money donated will be used for bills or costs that insurance doesn’t pay during her recovery. If anything is left over it will be donated to Iowa City hospital.
