Sophia's 2023 Chile Choir tour

Hi! I am Sophia Washington and I am a member of the Pennsylvania Girl Choir, a subset of the Commonwealth Youth Choirs, a mixed-age and mixed-voice choir that performs all over the Philadelphia region and travels the world during the off-season.

Commonwealth Youthchoirs (CY) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization with a mission to transform the lives of young people through the power of making music together … one song at a time.

I have been able to experience many opportunities from being a member of this choir for the last two years. For example, I traveled to Portugal and Morocco for the 2022 summer choir tour, I was a part of a conference in Wilmington, DE, celebrating the work of Black Choral Composers and was in a performance at the end of the conference, I have performed in different places in Philadelphia such as the Kimmel Center of Performing Arts and City Hall and I also was a intern for the choir for the 2022-2023 school year. This summer, I will participate as a member of our Honor Choir at a gathering at Messiah College in central PA.

CY has helped me build my leadership as a singer and a human being. Currently, we are preparing to tour in Chile in December of 2023 and I have received an invitation to participate. My tuition to go to Chile is a large amount so I am inviting friends, family, and extended members of my village to support me and my desire to go. The tuition will cover air fares, hotels, traveling from place to place, food, etc. Anything will help!:)
