In the blink of an eye your whole life can change.

To be young, in love, recently engaged…and then diagnosed with leukemia is unthinkable. While Sophia should have been planning her wedding, she was busy fighting for her life. And fight is exactly what she did. Through seemingly endless rounds of chemo, fevers, nausea and even a blood clot she remained faithful and positive. There was no other choice but to beat this terrible disease. In November 2012 she won that battle and was declared to be in remission. Overjoyed, Sophia could begin to rebuild her life. Soon after she was married to the love of her life, Braxton. The wedding was beautiful, and we could all agree there was so much to celebrate that night. Not long after, Braxton and Sophia received news that a beautiful baby girl was on the way! Londynn Kelley arrived with ten fingers, ten toes, and a set of lungs that let you know she was here. Watching Sophia and Braxton hold their little girl for the first time, I think you could actually see their hearts swell with love. Londynn was truly a miracle…for so many reasons.

For two years, life regained its hectic normalcy. Sleepless nights with a newborn, new jobs, a move from Colorado to Atlanta, first steps and first words…it was all welcomed with open arms, knowing how lucky they were to live this beautiful life together.

But, in the blink of an eye your whole life can change.

On October 18th, noticing a few symptoms that made her uneasy, Sophia went in for some blood work. Sitting in the doctor’s office they heard the word they feared the most, relapse. Within a minute Sophia went from planning a Sunday at the zoo with Londynn to scrambling to get admitted to the hospital and begin treatment. With that one word, the short term future of a family changed. Sophia’s worries are now different, worries that many of us will never have to face in our lives. To fight the first time was scary, but to have to fight a second time, with a one year old daughter that needs her mom, there is a different kind of fear in her heart.

For those of you reading this that know Sophia personally, there is no doubt that larger than any fear she is feeling is an even bigger fire and a fight within her to survive and beat leukemia once and for all. Within Sophia has a relationship and belief in the Lord that will see her through even in the rockiest of times. Within Sophia is so much love and light, that not even cancer can dull her shine in this world.

The stakes are higher this time. It’s not just chemotherapy to get through, but also a bone marrow transplant. There is a much longer recovery time, and the next year or more will be filled with endless doctor’s visits and limits on where she can and can’t go. On top of that is the financial burden. Having just started a new job a few months ago, Sophia doesn’t qualify for any paid medical leave, and there is no guarantee this new job she searched so hard for will still be there in a year. But that won’t stop her, she will continue to be brave and will continue to fight with a positive attitude. She will continue to pray and to believe in miracles, because that is who she is. Not even cancer can change that.

The prayers, thoughts, and support from family and friends is immeasurable. God has blessed this family with so many people to love them and stand in their corner during this difficult time.  To keep everyone informed, Sophia has started a blog. Please follow her on her journey here: http://sophiaskelley.blogspot.com

So many have stepped up and asked how they can help. This is how. I am asking that those who are able, please donate what you can towards the out of pocket medical expenses that Sophia and Braxton are facing. No amount is too small. Together we can help take one big burden off of their backs, so they can focus all energy on the great battle in front of them.
