Sonny Ausman – a talented trombonist with a slow Southern drawl, quiet chuckle, and a dry and witty sense of humor – passed away peacefully but too soon on July 31, 2025. Sonny graduated from the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music, served in the United States Navy Band, and performed locally and around the world as a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under the batons of Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, André Previn, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Gustavo Dudamel. Erica, Sonny’s wife and partner of 35 years, and daughters Amanda and Emma are adjusting to his sudden absence from their home, but not their hearts.

Indeed, family was of utmost importance to Sonny. In addition to the family's grief, Sonny's unexpected, long hospitalization and quick passing leaves them with many life-changing adjustments. Gifts of any size will be a great comfort and help to Erica, Amanda, and Emma and is appreciated as a lovely and kind ode and ovation to Sonny. Also, if you have any fond or memorable “Sonnyisms” to share, the family is compiling a timeless collection of his quips that we all can treasure, use, and remember him by for years to come.
