Hi, I'm Sonja and I appreciate you taking the time to get to know me and my story. My life changed dramatically when I found out I had colon cancer. It has changed even more after finding out that insurance will not cover the necessary port insertion to get chemo. I am doing my best to cover all the copays and charges my insurance doesn't cover, but it's adding up quicker than my paycheck can handle!
Here is a timeline of events that brought me to where I am today:
- Sometime in 2024 - didn't feel well and had abdominal pain. Thought I could walk it off... but it was walking faster than me and kicking my butt!
- February 2025 - Urgent care visit to get relief from the pain led to them sending me to the ER for appendicitis. Appendicitis sounds like a walk in the park right now! After a CT scan, I received a paper to get a colonoscopy in 1-2 days and a doctor soberly saying it was urgent and cancer was implied.
- Gastro doctor couldn't do the colonoscopy due to inflammation. Had to do 10 days of really nasty antibiotics. That was okay with me, I was not looking forward to my first colonoscopy...
- Colonoscopy day comes, tumor is too big to get past.
- Surgery is scheduled to remove the tumor and take part of the colon out. Once in there, the tumor has attached to the uterus, so now a hysterectomy is done as well, along with removing 23 lymph nodes, 4 testing positive. I looked like a crime scene with all the cuts and incisions.
- On to the oncologist we go...Stage 3C Colon Cancer. 12 rounds of chemo are needed. Schedule surgery for chemo port to be put in only to receive a call from the hospital a day and a half before surgery to say insurance isn't paying and I need $12,201 up front to have it done. I repeated $12,200??? I was quickly told no, $12,200 and $1. LOL, I wasn't worried about the $1, I had that in my purse, it was the $12,200 I didn't have.
This is the point where I realized that I need help and I'm not done fighting this.
This doesn't include the doctors or anesthesia cost, but if the port is placed at least we can start chemo.
With all of this said, first and foremost, listen to your body when it is talking to you. Don't wait until it's screaming at you like I did. Colon cancer is no joke. Go get your colonoscopy!
I appreciate any and all help whether it be monetary, sharing this link, or prayers and well wishes. Thank you for anything you can do.
I will keep everyone updated!
