Sonia’s recovery

Sonia is a 56-year-old, hard working woman since the age of 15. She has been working two jobs for most of her life and has always put others, and her cats, first. In 2015, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she beat it. In 2017, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Prior to her scheduled surgery, she was also diagnosed with stones in her pancreas, as well as stones in her liver. Sonia went through massive surgery to remove the cancer, the stones and her gall bladder. Following the surgery, she was in critical care for three weeks. After several weeks of recovery, she started chemotherapy treatments, which nearly killed her. She had to take six months of treatments and she nearly gave up, and Sonia is not a quitter. Halfway through chemo, she was told that the treatments had to stop due to problems with her liver. The doctor attempted to remove the stones in her liver in two separate procedures, but they were unsuccessful. On December 2017, she had to undergo another major surgery with a recovery of six weeks. During that recovery period, she was not been able to start the chemo treatments until the doctors confirmed that her liver was back to normal. In January 2018, she was notified that she was fired from her employment, leaving her without insurance. Due to no insurance nor income, Sonia had to put her chemo treatments on hold until she could afford insurance. Sonia was just recently approved for Obamacare insurance; however she is struggling to pay for the cost of the insurance, the medications for her treatments and the out of pocket expenses. Sonia currently resides in Orlando with her elderly parents, as she needs help with her care. Her sisters, Julia and Nydia, have been taking turns traveling to Florida to help care for her.
