Dear Family, Friends and Kind Strangers,

On behalf of the Castillo Family, we want to thank you for taking the time in reading their story.

We come to you with heavy hearts and a plea for support for the Castillo family during a difficult time. Their beloved mother, Sonia Castillo, sadly passed away unexpectedly on February 27, 2024.

Sonia was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. To know Sonia was an absolute honor, she was the guiding light for many. Sonia made the world come alive. She made the world colorful. She was an inspiration behind all that happens. Sonia was the pillar of strength to many around us, the centrifugal force of her own little world, called family.

Sonia has had multiple appointments throughout the year regarding her health and on December 6th she had finally received some hopeful news regarding a procedure that would help her consume/swallow food. Unfortunately, this procedure was the catalyst to many more visits and unanswered questions regarding Sonia’s health. After multiple visits to several ERs, Sonia was admitted to Middlesex Hospital where the family received some devastating news, she was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. Although the news was heartbreaking, Sonia and the family were led to believe that there was still hope to fight and so they did. On February 19th, Sonia finally received her PET scan and was even given treatment options to fight the cancer. Unfortunately, throughout the course of just several days, the family went through many changes to the treatment plan, with each doctor essentially removing their treatment plans off the table. The family was devastated, but Sonia kept fighting. The pulmonology doctor suggested that a surgery to place a stint in her trachea will improve Sonia’s breathing and make her more comfortable. With the guidance from Sonia, the family agreed to the surgery on February 24th, and it was by all accounts successful, until it wasn’t. Sadly, Sonia’s breathing did not improve, and her health declined rapidly. Sonia passed away surrounded by loved ones on February 27th,

Because of all the unexpected medical visits/treatments, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, a donation towards Sonia’s medical bills will be greatly appreciated.

The Castillo Family would like to thank you all for surrounding them with so much love during this difficult time.
