What is Songs for Slutty Girls?

Songs for Slutty Girls, a diary entry turned pop-rock musical that examines the ecstasy, pain, and hilarity of sex through a year in the life of one woman, makes its Brooklyn premiere, April 19, 2020 at Littlefield Performance + Art Space at 7:30 p.m. A musical that was created about women, for women, by women, Songs for Slutty Girls is a songbook about sexuality, liberation, and the encounters every twenty-something has but would like to forget—between the sheets.

Meet the Creative Team

Kailey Marshall is a New York-based composer/lyricist/librettist. As a performer of her own work, Marshall creates femme forward, pop-infused musical theatre. Marshall’s work has been featured at 54 Below, Joe’s Pub, Don’t Tell Mama’s, the Highline Ballroom, and Lincoln Center. In 2016 she was selected as one of five composers for New Dramatists Composer/Librettist Studio, a two-week intensive in collaboration with the playwrights in residence at New Dramatists. She was also featured at 54 Below as part of the New Writers Series, where she performed, music directed, and wrote an evening of new material. She has received readings of two of her shows, Confirmed and Songs for Slutty Girls in association with Pace University’s New Musicals Program, and Don’t Tell Mama’s. In 2015, Marshall music directed the New York Times Critic Pick If I Never Love Again, by Clare Barron, at the Bushwick Starr. She won the Twenty-Somethings Two Fresh Pens Contest with her song “Give It Up” and most recently won Taylor Louderman’s Write Out Loud competition with her song “Brave”. Marshall is currently working on Vengeance, a country revenge thriller, and is a graduate of Pace University’s BFA Musical Theatre program.

Direction for the first fully realized production of this show will be by Dana Greenfield, with music direction by Macy Schmidt. Cast TBD.

How was Songs for Slutty Girls born?

In development since 2014, the work originated with musical theater students at Pace University, and has evolved into a powerful anthem of feminism, liberation and celebration of truth, experience, emotion, and growth. Inspired by the personal account of the unapologetic Marshall chronicling a particularly tumultuous time of her life, the show is made up of actual diary entries alongside pop/rock anthems about sexual encounters. Marshall hopes to fill a space in the musical theatre genre that tends to leave out the sexual perspectives of women.
