Don protégé
Hello,
My name is Sondra Kinney and I recently was accepted into Sotheby's Institute of Art to obtain my MA in Art Business in London.
For those who don't know me, here is a little background information. My interest in Art History started when I began school for my Bachelors degree; it was the first time I was exposed to a subject that not only discussed the visual aspects of an art piece but the history and psychology as well. I liked that it challenged me in a visual and abstract way as well as an analytical way. While I studied at UC Santa Cruz I had the privilege of studying abroad in Rome, Italy for 6 month during my senior year. While abroad I was able to set aside my texts books and study masterpieces in person including the Sistine Chapel, La Pieta, and the Trevi Fountain. I learned a new respect for the art that I spent previous years studying. Studying abroad created a very emotional connection to a subject I already had so much passion for. It was then that I learned the difference of seeing a piece of art in a book compared to the feelings evoked when seeing it in person.
After graduating I would like to pursue a career with a company like Artsy or Paddle8. Companies like Artsy and Paddle8 are online auction houses that bring artists, galleries, sellers and buyers together. I am very interested in companies like these because I feel that they are able to expand their customers to those who may not otherwise walk into a gallery or attend an auction. With the new age of technology many people are more comfortable with online platforms. I think that this also gives online based companies like this an opportunity to educate those who are new to buying art. I find many people I know do not buy art because they do not know what, “good art” is or have no idea what many contemporary art pieces mean. Having an education center for auction houses will help to bring new buyers and teach others how to view and appreciate contemporary art. Once people feel comfortable viewing and understanding art I think that many more people would be open to buying pieces. I have so much passion for art and the way it can influence the world around us. It would bring me the greatest joy to be able to share my passion for art and inspire others to invest and love the world I find so much possibility in.
I was unable to recieve the scholarship that I was hoping for and had to take out all of my funds in student loans. The requested $5,000 would go toward the expenses of moving and relocating to a different country, which unfortunately is not cheap. If you would like to leave your address in a comment or email me I would love to send you a thank you postcard from London when I move. Thank you for any and all of the donations.
