AMERICAN LEGION SON AND FAMILY FORCED TO MOVE

Donation protected

Hi, everyone. Please share.
My name is Derrick and my father fought in the Korean War/Conflict. I am a member of The American Legion (Sons of the American Legion-S.A.L. IL Branch). I am also a member of the Local School Council Board in my community (LSC Chicago, IL), and hope that I'm able to reach out to everyone for assistance for my/our family emergency.

My family and I are being forced out of our apartment building. The new landlord of this building property we live in says that it has been labeled 'Not Habitable'. The landlord has limited the time we have to stay here and **still requires we pay ALL rent, even though the letter states: Building is Not Habitable.**

We don't have money saved up to make this kind of drastically fast transition.

I am a single parent of children with Special Needs and I left my job at the hospital to become a full-time care provider in 2012. We have lived through many seizures and my family saw many Emergency Room visits. My youngest Son's seizures became prevalent when he was three years old. He has been working through his needs since April 2009. I homeschooling him through a CPS Homebound Program, as he can't wear a mask all day long. He tolerates me as his teacher. I'm so proud of him.

I asked my young son's high school Social Worker for assistance finding financial aid for relocating plus deposit and she refused, saying that she thinks we are safe and not in harm's way. She also said she felt uncomfortable doing that for my family-helping us. I don't understand what she means if we will be homeless.

Some Of Our Apartment Issues:
1-I have to wash our dishes in our bathtub as our Kitchen sink doesn't drain.
2-I was warned by police that the security cameras on site may not be working or have faulty internet.
3-Our oven hasn't worked  in over 6-7 months. I thought once the other building was finished, we would receive our repairs.
4-The Kitchen floor tiles are broken, cracked, and removed by me for safety. The entire Kitchen floor has to be re-grouted and re-tiled.
5-Constant nonstop leak in our Bathroom bathtub.
6-Squirrels living in the Attic above our apartment.
 7-

**We can't put our air conditioner back in the window here and temperatures in Chicago has been over 94 degrees for last 3 days. Today's high temperature is forecast to be 96 degrees.**

We need to move on and I don't want my family to wind up in court. We don't want to stay here anymore. We are having problems affording proper storage space to keep our possessions in due to timing.

I have called so many agencies for rental assistance and they have all told me they don't have any rental funding, and No moving assistance funding in their programs. I have contacted Legal Aid Agencies to ask for financial assistance and have had little success. I still keep trying and praying for something to change but we have no new aid as of yet.

My family's wish is to:
Place a deposit at a storage unit for 2 bedroom holding or 10 x 20 or 15 x 20 ft. storage unit while we look for a new home. We need to get as much of our things out of here now. We have limited time to get out of this building.

Raise enough funding to put a Security Deposit plus 1st Month Rent on a new Apartment.

Pay for a Moving Truck (U-Haul) and pay for Movers to help us with moving our furniture and appliances.

Please share our story.

Thank you to anyone and everyone willing to help our family.
