Sometimes Superwoman needs help

June 8, 2018 my phone rang once at 7:19am and again at 7:20am - something’s wrong. I answered the phone and my best friend of ten years is hysterically crying on the other end. This is probably the fourth time in my life that I’ve heard her cry. She’s strong.
She tells me there was a fire, and that they’ve lost practically everything; their home, their cars and sadly two of their family pets. I tell her something I thought I would never have to say “you’ve survived one fire, you can do it again.” Like I said, she’s strong.
Deidre Marie Jeppson, California born and raised was hand picked and delivered to the East Coast, at Dominican College by our college softball coach. I can never forget the day this girl walked into my life, Superman pendent around her neck (it was her late father’s, I’d later learn). She was who she was, and she didn’t care who knew it. Ten years later she’s still that same person. She stayed on the east coast after we graduated and just recently decided to move back home and try life from a different angle. I couldn’t fathom sending her home so we took a road trip for 5 days this way I didn’t have to say goodbye, just drop her home and an “I’ll see you later.” She’s been home for a month and half, and just landed a job she was supposed to start that Friday, talk about timing. Instead of waking up and getting ready for her first day, she was woke by a fire that destroyed her home.
I always tell DJ she’s the luckiest unlucky person, and I mean it. This is the second fire this family has had to face. DJ lost her father when she was in High School, and when walking back through the remains of her house was able to find a box of his things that she kept through the years. I believe in signs, and it isn’t ironic that that too, survived the fire.
Please help my friend and her family rebuild their lives. They are strong and they have done this before, but they need help. They have nothing but the clothes on their backs. I believe good people do good things for good people. And maybe together we can help DJ, our very own superwoman and her family get back on their feet. Anything helps and is gratefully appreciated.
