Hi! We're Sara and Jonathan Mayo. We are a couple married for 27 years who decided to work on a project together that would bring together our passions: the arts and minor league baseball. We're both intrigued by the ways that communities come together and wanted to explore why public gathering spaces are more important than ever. We decided to journey across the country to several small cities to dig deeper into why each place mattered, matters and will matter in the future.

One of our stops on this trail was Asheville, North Carolina, where we were drawn in by the people, the surroundings and the stories, especially just months after Hurricane Helene. We spent two weeks in the beautiful city nestled into the Appalachians, collecting those stories and forming strong bonds with its residents and its setting. While researching for our book, "Something Worth Saving: Finding America’s soul in small cities and towns," we were so drawn to what makes Asheville special, particularly its resolve coming back from the devastation of the hurricane, that we decided to create a podcast miniseries titled Asheville Stories of Resilience.

This miniseries will be part of a larger podcast project, which we're also calling "Something Worth Saving," bringing you the voices and experiences from all of the cities we've visited.

We're currently working to get the beginning of Asheville Stories of Resilience ready for the one-year mark of Hurricane Helene, at the end of September. All of this work takes time and, of course, money, which is why we have created this GoFundMe.
