Hello. I just wanted to tell my son's story and raise money to get him something special for his act of bravery and selflessness during the scariest day all of our lives. My son's name is Johnny Joe Mena III (JJ for short). His day started like any other as he went to school to enjoy his last week before summer until joy and laughter turned to fear and confusion. JJ was in his classroom when everything started. He told me that he first thought someone was banging on his classroom door but it was actually the gunshots from directly across the hallway. When they realized what was going on he dropped to the ground and hurried under his teachers desk. I asked him what he was thinking at that moment and he told me he was crying and praying. When I asked what he was asking God he replied "I told him I'm not ready to go, I don't want to die". My heart sank for the thought of what he was thinking about. Then I asked what happened after as he told me he could just hear more banging and the sound of a man saying "put down the weapon" when finally someone broke the window to his classroom and told everyone to get out through the window. I want to get JJ something for what he did next. As they headed for the window some kids were having trouble getting up and my selfless little buddy stopped to help lift his classmates out of the window. My son was the last one out. But I am just amazed at how he went from pure fear to thinking of everyone else. He told me that the cop that pulled him out called him a "little trooperand a hero". He was so brave that day and we are just amazed that his little sister and baby brother have such a role model to look up to.
