My name is Carl Downie and I recenlty visited my community of Somerset, St. Thomas, Jamaica. During my visit I had a conversation with the neighborhood kids, who explained the community center was no longer operational. The center is a vital part of the community, it serves as a library, computer center, study hall and a sports complex.
I made a few calls, met with some community leaders and took a tour of the center. Upon arrival at the center I was pleasantly surprised of all it has to offer, there are 12-15 Dell computer stations with flat screen monitors, 3 enclosed bathrooms, library, study work area and a non working printer and unlimited free internet wifi connection.
All this stopped because the electric billed wasn't paid,
so I had to ask, "how much is the bill?" It is $6000.00
Jamaican dollars, thats approximately $50.00 US.
That's it! At that point I decided to help.
My plan is to first get the electricity back on.
2nd: Get a printer so the kids can do homework and projects.
3rd: Install proper night lights for the football field.
4th: Get the premisses fenced for paid events.
With all these things in place the the center can host alot of events for a cost which will generate some income to pay for the utitlities and maintain itself. The potential is endless equipped with the right tools.
This location has served alot of us as kids over the years even without the modern technology and it would be ashame for the kids of this generation and ones to come to be deprieved of the same fun/joy that we all experienced at some time during our lives here.
My family and I enjoying the field on vacation in 2012.
Please help me help our community! Thanks!
