PROYECTO SOLAR VIEQUES 2023

Dear Friends,   

 I hope you can help me raise money to buy solar equipment to help install in Vieques this year. 

I'm happy to say that the solar electric "back-up" systems I helped install last year worked well through the various blackouts which occurred, including the recent blackout; a big thank you to all who helped in 2022!. While saving a small amount of money daily on a household's electric bill, during a blackout the systems provide limited electricity for lights, communications, and (most importantly) refrigeration, so that food doesn't spoil.     

The time I spent in Vieques last year strengthened my impression that Vieques is an ideal place to lead the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables.  There is adequate sunshine and wind, plus modest electricity requirements.  The existing fossil fuel grid grows more expensive even as it continues to fail to be reliable. And there are neighborhoods with no grid access.  Best of all, Viequenses want solar; the only impediments are money, equipment, and know-how. Tragically, the government and FEMA are stuck, their inability to act bitterly symbolized for Viequenses by the island's prolonged lack of a hospital.  That's why I simply go ahead "on foot" one solar panel at a time, one neighborhood workshop per month. That is why I appeal to you for help with donations.   

 This is not an appeal for disaster aid; other good organizations are doing that.  This is an appeal to help create a vision and a pathway to a world where people have local autonomy and resilience and don't live as victims between crises.     

My hope for this year is to repeat last year; donate and assist to install 3-4 systems, hold workshops, and provide installation help to any other household that buys their own equipment or seeks repairs/upgrades of existing systems. All the money raised will only pay for materials and shipping.  All the work is volunteer.       Thank you, Lu

 Espero que me puedan ayudar a recaudar dinero para comprar equipos solares para ayudar a instalar en Vieques este año.      Me alegre decir que los sistemas de "respaldo" de energía solar que ayudé a instalar el año pasado funcionaron bien durante los diversos apagones que ocurrieron, incluido el reciente; ¡Muchas gracias a todos los que ayudaron en 2022!. Si bien ahorra una pequeña cantidad de dinero diariamente en la factura de electricidad de un hogar, durante un apagón, los sistemas proporcionan electricidad limitada para luces, comunicaciones y (lo más importante) refrigeración, para que los alimentos no se pierden.      

El tiempo que pasé en Vieques el año pasado reforzó mi impresión de que Vieques es un lugar ideal para liderar la transición energética de los combustibles fósiles a las energías renovables. Hay suficiente sol y viento, además de modestos requisitos de electricidad. La red de combustibles fósiles existente se vuelve más costosa incluso cuando sigue sin ser confiable. Y hay barrios sin acceso a la red. Lo mejor de todo es que los viequenses quieren energía solar; los únicos impedimentos son el dinero, el equipo y los conocimientos técnicos.      

Trágicamente, el gobierno y FEMA están estancados, su incapacidad para actuar amargamente simbolizada para los viequenses por la prolongada falta de un hospital en la isla. Por eso simplemente voy adelante "a pie" un panel solar a la vez, un taller de barrio por mes. Por eso les pido que me ayuden con las donaciones.      

Este no es un pedido de ayuda por desastre; otras buenas organizaciones están haciendo eso. Este es un llamado para ayudar a crear una visión y una vereda hacia un mundo donde las comunidades tengan autonomía local y resiliencia y no vivan como víctimas entre crisis.      

Mi esperanza para este año es repetir el año pasado; done y ayude a instalar 3-4 sistemas, realice talleres y brinde ayuda con la instalación a cualquier otro hogar que compre su propio equipo o busque reparaciones/actualizaciones de los sistemas existentes. Todo el dinero recaudado solo pagará los materiales y el envío. Todo el trabajo es voluntario.

Please accept my deepest gratitude for your participation in the Proyecto Solar Vieques 2022. Whether you are a donor, volunteer, consultant, or friend, the part you played made the whole thing possible.

   In thirty years of working in one-off design and construction I have never participated in a project so charmed with good people, good planning, enthusiastic participation, and –let’s face it–, a bit of luck.

   In six fun and busy weeks we succeeded in: 

*picking up and delivering the last 28 of 300 donated solar panels from the warehouse in Toa Baja

*shipping panels, supplies, racks, batteries, and electronics for 5 installations to Vieques

*completing 4.5 installations on Vieques

*helping out on 4 other installations/repairs

*conducting about a dozen consultations for future systems

*holding two well-attended workshops at two of the installations

*doing the majority of our commuting by bicycle

*prototyping a successful kitchen counter water distiller for making battery water

*keeping 2-5 volunteers working on solar installations every day for 5 weeks

*familiarizing a couple resident/installers with the basics of solar energy and electricity

*sharing work, tools, and expertise with local installers and activists

We plan to repeat and expand the installations next year. Thank you for lending a hand!
