Solorio 2016-17 DREAM Scholarship

Donation protected
Solorio’s 2016-2017 DREAMers Scholarship Drive marks the fourth annual year that the Solorio community has come together to raise money to help fund scholarships for its graduating seniors who are undocumented. As the years go on and political climates change, the importance of this scholarship to our students has only grown. To date, the fund has awarded over $11,000 in scholarships to sixteen different students who in turn have used the money to pay for tuition, books, and fees.

In addition to all of the obstacles that any other Solorio student faces in making college a reality, undocumented students are faced with the additional hurdles of being ineligible to receive any state or federal financial aid. For many, this means closing an already large financial gap without access to over $10,000 in grants and additional low interest loan opportunities open to their peers.

To ensure that the students are the sole beneficiaries of the scholarship, all of the money raised will go directly towards the scholarships and disbursed to their institution. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated and go a long way in helping students accomplish their educational goals.

Testimonies:
As one of the recipients of the Solorio Academy Dream Scholarship, I am blessed to have the support of all those who helped me as well as my fellow dream classmates to continue our education beyond high school. As a dream student, one struggles to financially find the adequate college that will allow us accomplish our dreams. Embarking into the college journey is a big step that is settling our future. As students we are already overwhelmed with school work and our current social status. Worrying about educational financial issues can suffocate students us even more and force us to stop us from reaching our goals. Furthermore, many of us are first generation students. As first generation students we are unsure where to find resources available to us. As a result, the best aid that one could receive is have the support from the current school one attends. I was delighted to attend a high school that helped me every way possible to continue my education.Receiving this scholarship has been a great help. -Ivon, freshman at Dominican University

I wanted to say thank you to everyone that donated to the Solorio Dream Team Scholarship because regardless of the amount, everything is something. I am currently attending Illinois Institute of Technology which was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. The Dream Scholarship not only helped me feel more sure about my decision, but to also fee worry free about how I was going to pay for this year’s tuition. This scholarship showed me a lot about what a community can do for their fellow students when they put their mind to it. I strongly believe that anyone could have had this opportunity because there are so many undocumented students like myself at Solorio which makes me feel thankful that I was selected as a recipient. -Maria, freshman at the Illinois Institute of Technology
