Solidarity in Savannah is a community-based group that uses the evidence-based public health approach to violence.
Our Mission Statement: Proactively connect tools and resources to Savannah's high-crime communities to aid with sustainable self-sufficiency.
Our Vision: Offer a cure to violence through the public health approach and community collaboration
More information on our specific goals and the components of the public health approach can be found
HERE.
On a weekly basis, we go into the high-crime communities and build relationships with those who are involved in criminal activity and those who are at-risk of being involved. We want to meet them where they are and find out their needs & goals. From there, we work to assist them with making long-term, positive changes (i.e. getting them to job skills training or further education).
What are some things our Street Outreach Team does?
- Work to prevent retaliation shootings.
- Assist high-risk individuals with job applications, interview clothing, and transportation to interviews.
- Educate the community on the direct and indirect effects of violence.
- Help those we work with define their long-term goals and create a plan of action to get it accomplished.
Please follow us on our Facebook page
as we frequently post our activities and updates.
We know the public health model works; multiple, independent studies have been done on it. The Street Outreach Team is a VITAL component to this model's success. Effective Street Outreach members are ex-offenders and/or ex-gang members.
Within the next 6 months, we would like to be able to do the following:
- increase manpower on the street outreach team to ensure consistency.
- work toward providing 8 paid-positions on the Street Outreach Team, thereby creating more jobs in Savannah.
- continue building relationships in high-crime communities.
- Facilitate GED preparation within the neighborhoods.
Some of our current costs include:
- printing materials that bring awareness to the communities in which we work.
- we recently became incorporated in Georgia and have a fiscal sponsor, The Harambee House, Inc. We are working to become an independent 501(c)(3).
- providing immediate needs to those we work with, in the event they cannot be covered by collaborating community agencies or groups (i.e. bus passes for those we work with to get to job interviews, educational supplies, etc.)
The Solidarity in Savannah volunteers dedicate well over 10 hours per week. We work full-time jobs, have families, and fund every aspect of outreach. Our Program Director, Community Coordinator, Street Outreach Team and all of those who commit their time to this cause believe in the public health approach.
We love the beautiful city of Savannah and want to build our communities up. Please feel free to ask us any questions!
