This is Llaima Suwani.
She's a filmmaker, a community builder, an artist who has spent her life pointing her camera at the stories the world tends to overlook.
Right now, she is fighting for her life — and she needs our help!
Six years ago, Llaima was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She went through chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery — and came out the other side still filming, still creating, still running workshops with communities around the world.
A year ago, metastasis appeared in her bones. Recently, it spread to her lungs and liver.
She is not stopping. But she needs help to keep going.
The coming year will bring intensive medical treatment.
What Llaima needs most during this time — beyond medicine — is a strong foundation of care:
- Physiotherapy to keep her body strong and her spirit lifted
- Good, nourishing food to support her through treatment
- Household support — cleaning, errands, the daily things that become mountains when your energy is rationed
- Caregiving assistance so that she is never alone in hard moments
These are not luxuries. They are the difference between enduring treatment and being able to live through it — to continue creating, to stay connected to her community, to remain the person she is.
Who Is Llaima?
Llaima built The Self Portrait Factory, a methodology that has helped over 150 people tell their own stories through film.
Her documentary And Still the Seed won Best Short Documentary at three international festivals.
During these days, her latest documentary 13.4 Seconds to Nowhere premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, selected as a winner of ESPN & Tribeca Studios' Intersections for Latino Filmmakers. The film is an intimate portrait of Llaima herself rebuilding after loss — because she made this film while fighting her own battle, with her own body.
She couldn’t be in New York for the premiere. She needs to be home, resting, preparing for what's next.
A Life Spent Giving
Llaima has spent her entire career giving. From projects with refugees in Berlin, children in Colombia, Sahrawis in the Western Sahara to works with communities in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
She is young. She is irreplaceable. She is the kind of person the world genuinely needs more of — someone who looks at what's broken or overlooked and says: I'll make something beautiful here.
Right now, she is asking — through us — for the first time, to receive.

Una cineasta que ha dedicado su vida a apuntar su cámara hacia las historias comunitarias que el mundo tiende a ignorar.
En este momento, Llaima está luchando por su vida - ¡y necesita nuestra ayuda!
Hace seis años, a Llaima le diagnosticaron una forma agresiva de cáncer de mama inflamatorio. Pasó por quimioterapia, radioterapia y cirugía — nunca dejó de filmar, crear, dirigir e impartir talleres con comunidades alrededor del mundo.
Hace un año supimos de la metástasis en sus huesos. Recientemente, el cáncer se extendió a sus pulmones e hígado.
Llaima ha tenido que hacer una pausa y necesita ayuda para seguir adelante con un nuevo tratamiento médico intensivo.
Lo que Llaima más necesita durante este tiempo — más allá de la medicina — es una base sólida de cuidado:
- Fisioterapia para mantener su cuerpo fuerte y su espíritu en alto
- Alimentación buena y nutritiva para apoyarla durante el tratamiento
- Apoyo en el hogar — limpieza, mandados, las cosas cotidianas que se convierten en montañas cuando tu energía es limitada
- Asistencia de cuidado para que nunca esté sola en los momentos difíciles
No son lujos, son la diferencia entre soportar el tratamiento y poder vivir a través de él — para seguir creando, para mantenerse conectada a su comunidad, sus hijas y esposo y para seguir siendo quien es.
¿Quién es Llaima?
Llaima fundó The Self Portrait Factory, una metodología que ha ayudado a más de 150 personas a contar sus propias historias a través del cine en diversos paises del mundo.
Su documental “Todavía la semilla” ganó el premio al Mejor Cortometraje Documental en tres festivales internacionales.
En estos días, su más reciente documental “13.4 Segundos a Ningún Lugar” se estrenó en el Festival de Cine de Tribeca en la ciudad de Nueva York, seleccionado como ganador de las Intersecciones para Cineastas Latinos de ESPN y Tribeca Studios. Esta película es un autoretrato íntimo en el que ella intenta reconstruirse tras una pérdida — ya que hizo este filme mientras libraba su propia batalla con su propio cuerpo.
Llaima no pudo estar en Nueva York para el estreno. Su capacidad de generar ingresos es muy limitada. Necesita estar en casa, descansando, preparándose para lo que viene.
Una vida entregada a los demás-
Llaima ha pasado toda su carrera dando. Desde proyectos con refugiados en Berlín, niños en Colombia, saharauis en el Sahara Occidental hasta trabajos con comunidades en la República Dominicana, Cuba y Puerto Rico.
Es joven. Es insustituible. Es el tipo de persona que el mundo genuinamente necesita más - alguien que mira lo que está roto o ignorado y dice: aquí haré algo hermoso.
