Shesnarda's Recovery: Legal, Medical & Psychiatric

Shesnarda Quijije, a young dentist from Manta, Ecuador is in the hospital receiving surgeries and psychiatric care as part of her recovery from being bitten, clawed, beaten with a blunt weapon, stabbed and slashed nearly to death with broken glass by a jealous ex-boyfriend who decided her life was his to take.

Shesnarda Quijije, una joven dentista de Manta, Ecuador, se encuentra en el hospital recibiendo cirugías y atención psiquiátrica como parte de su recuperación de haber sido mordida, arañada, golpeada con un arma contundente, apuñalada y cortada casi hasta la muerte con vidrios rotos por un ex celoso. Novio que decidió que su vida era suya.

Shesnarda’s close friends took the initiative to begin this GoFundMe and because the system is not available here in Ecuador, my wife Ambar (Shesnarda's older sister) and I have accepted the responsibility for creating and managing it. The following is our account of what has happened and will be updated accordingly as the case evolves:

Las amigas cercanos de Shesnarda tomaron la iniciativa de comenzar este GoFundMe y debido a que el sistema no está disponible aquí en Ecuador, mi esposa Ambar (la hermana mayor de Shesnarda) y yo aceptamos la responsabilidad de crearlo y manejarlo. El siguiente es nuestro relato de lo sucedido y se actualizará en consecuencia a medida que evolucione el caso:

On November 28th, three days after commemorating the International Day to Eliminate Violence against Women, Alexis Mauricio Carvache Taipe, known as Mauro, a 36-year-old Ecuadorian, decided to violently break into the private dental office of my younger sister Shesnarda Quijije who was alone at the time.

28 de Noviembre, tres días después de conmemorarse el Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer, Alexis Mauricio Carvache Taipe, conocido como Mauro, un ecuatoriano de 36 años, decidió irrumpir violentamente en el consultorio dental privado de mi hermana menor Shesnarda Quijije quien se encontraba sola en el tiempo.

He arrived armed: with a knife, a hammer, an iron weight plate and all his rage with the full intention to extinguish the life of the woman who he once claimed to love. This came more than 2 months after my sister had ended the relationship yet Mauricio would not accept her decision and wanted to be "together until eternity".

Llegó armado: con un cuchillo, un martillo, una pesa de hierro y toda su rabia con la plena intención de apagar la vida de la mujer que una vez dijo amar. Esto ocurrió más de 2 meses después de que mi hermana había terminado la relación pero Mauricio no aceptaba su decisión y quería estar "juntos hasta la eternidad".

That's when my sister's worst nightmare began. Nearly 10 minutes passed before police arrived. During that time she was beaten in her face, clawed, stabbed and bitten by Mauricio until she was within inches of her life.

Fue entonces cuando comenzó la peor pesadilla de mi hermana. Pasaron casi 10 minutos antes de que llegara la policía. Durante ese tiempo, Mauricio la golpeó en la cara, la arañó, la apuñaló y la mordió hasta que estuvo a centímetros de su vida.

And to think, she was getting ready to grab her backpack and go to the English course that she had just begun. A decision she made to further her career and bring her closer to her dream of owning and operating her very own dental practice to service the entire community here in Manta.

Y pensar, se estaba preparando para agarrar su mochila e ir al curso de inglés que acababa de comenzar. Una decisión que tomó para avanzar en su carrera y acercarla a su sueño de ser dueña y operar su propio consultorio dental para servir a toda la comunidad aquí en Manta.

After immediately receiving the first punch to her face, there was no time to speak, there was no time to calm him down, there were simply continuous blows to the head with the weight plate, and multiple attacks with glass, especially on her face, neck and back as you can see from the photos.

Yes, deep wounds on her face that, according to specialists, are common for attempted femicides, and are used as yet another method for controlling and humiliating the woman, thereby affecting her self-esteem in the future.

Sí, heridas profundas en el rostro que, según los especialistas, son comunes en los intentos de feminicidio, y son utilizadas como un método más para controlar y humillar a la mujer, afectando su autoestima en el futuro.

But these attacks go beyond marks, scars and bruises. There will be a long road to recovery both from her physical wounds and her psychological scars.

Pero estos ataques van más allá de marcas, cicatrices y hematomas. Habrá un largo camino hacia la recuperación tanto de sus heridas físicas como de sus cicatrices psicológicas.

Shesnarda has survived to tell the tale. Her survival will be accompanied by psychological traumas that will last a lifetime.

But, I want to tell you, little sister, that #NoEstasAlone, (You Are Not Alone). There are already thousands of people throughout Ecuador who are aware of your case. We are fighting every day for you. We are trusting that the authorities will do their job and the justice system will prevail.

We are all with you, Shez, and we will be by your side so that the nightmares will someday end, the sudden shocks and anxiety that you are experiencing during the day and in the night will disappear. We will overcome this depression and post-traumatic stress together. All this will be with the help of God, friends and family as our parents have always instilled in us.

Todos estamos contigo, Shez, y estaremos a tu lado para que algún día terminen las pesadillas, desaparezcan los sobresaltos repentinos y la ansiedad que estás experimentando durante el día y la noche. Juntos superaremos esta depresión y estrés postraumático. Todo esto será con la ayuda de Dios, amigos y familiares como siempre nos han inculcado nuestros padres.

There is so much to tell, but we believe that God will enlighten us in this process. We hope that we will see you in a few years, standing in front of thousands and thousands of women from different countries, to tell your testimony and bring attention and awareness to this travesty. These femicidal animals who try to extinguish the lives of women exist in every society and there are too many who get away with it still to this day.

Hay mucho que contar, pero creemos que Dios nos iluminará en este proceso. Esperamos verte dentro de unos años, frente a miles y miles de mujeres de diferentes países, para contar tu testimonio y llamar la atención y la conciencia sobre esta farsa. Estos animales feminicidas que intentan extinguir la vida de las mujeres existen en todas las sociedades y son muchos los que se salen con la suya hasta el día de hoy.

We are asking for assistance through this GoFundMe in order to help Shesnarda afford the legal, medical, surgical and psychiatric professionals who will work to ensure that she receives justice and a full recovery.

As it currently stands, and we will update this page as more information is gathered, the donations received will be used to pay for:

Legal fees: the attacker has already filed what is called a ‘Violencia Psicologica’ or ‘Psychological Abuse’ counter-suit against Shesnarda which, as ridiculous as it seems, will cost the family more to counteract.

Surgeries: Shesnarda has sustained bite, stab and cut wounds all over her face and neck, requiring more than 100 stitches in several different places. She has lost the use of one finger and, as a dentist, this is clearly going to affect her ability to continue in her career if not properly cared for.
