Solar for Scholar: Bringing Light to Learning

Deep in the heart of Uganda, two hours of the capital Kampala, lies the Our Lady Parents school that is more than just a place of learning - it is a home for 450 children, a beacon of hope for families, and a lifeline for 30 students battling the genetic Sickle Cell disease. This school is their second home, providing education, care, friendships, and support in a community where opportunities are often scarce or unaffordable.

But every day, the school faces a challenge that truly limits its potential: power outages.

Without electricity, teacher cannot print essential learning materials. The school does not have enough textbooks for every student, so every worksheet, test, and lesson plan must be printed. When the power goes out, the learning process is massively impacted. There is no light for evening studies, and no way to pump clean water from the 60-meter-deep well. The old and noisy generator, costly and polluting, does not provide a sustainable solution.

For children with Sickle Cell disease, the lack of electricity is more than just an inconvenience - it is a risk. These students need a stable, safe environment, but without power, they face nights in darkness, no access to basic medical care, and challenges that most children their age could never imagine. However, here it is a constant reality.

For the 30 children living with Sickle Cell disease, this school is more than just a place to learn - it is a safe haven in a world that often turns its back on them. In Uganda, Sickle Cell disease is deeply misunderstood. Social stigma and misinformation mean that many of these children face rejection in their own communities and sometimes even their own family. Traditional beliefs often blame the condition on curses or bad luck, leading families to seek ineffective and harmful remedies instead of medical care. But here, at this school, they are safe and accepted. They are supported. They are seen. Reliable electricity is not just about light - it is about life. It powers the environment they need to stay warm during cold nights when pain crises strike. It powers the well they depend upon to stay hydrated, a big dilemma for our Sicklers. Daily hydration is a must for our kids. It allows for communication with medical professionals in emergencies. It ensures that the school can offer a stable, nurturing environment where these children are not treated as outcasts but like any other child as worthy and full of potential. Without power, the lifeline Our Lady Parents school offers is fragile. With solar energy, we give these children a fighting chance - a chance to learn, to be cared for, and to believe in a future where they are not forgotten but play an active role. Your support does not just power a school - it saves and nurtures lives.

This is why Solar for Scholars exists!

We are launching a pilot project to install just two solar panels, a first step toward energy independence. These panels will ensure that students have light to study, teachers can print materials they need for class, and that clean water can be pumped reliably. By replacing the generator with a clean renewable energy source, we are investing in the future - one where education is not disrupted by darkness. Thereby supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy (https://sdgs.un.org/goals).

The funds raised will go directly toward purchasing and installing the solar panels, and every step of the process will be documented with full transparency. This project is more than just about electricity - it is about empowering a school to thrive, giving children the tools they need to succeed, and proving that even a small change can literally spark a brighter future.

With your support, we can light up classrooms, power education, and ensure that no child's learning is left in the dark.

Join us in bringing Solar for Scholars to life. Because when you bring light to a school, you illuminate the path to a better future.

Join us here at the Our Lady School (https://ourladyps.org). Meet our students and meet our Sicklers. Experience our classroom and break time. Take the school bus with our students or sit with them during the assembly. We would love to show you around!
